bass vi vs baritone geetz... talk to me...

Post by magiclawnchair »

so, its my understanding that a bass vi is a 30" scale that is normally tuned e-e in the bass guitar register and a baritone guitar is around 27.5" scale that is normally tuned from b-b in between the guitar and bass register. the bass vi can handle being down-tuned more with the 30" scale over the baritone. this is correct?

i do have an agile baritone and i enjoy the tones but have been very curious to the 30" scale. i am thinking about a custom egc and not really sure which scale i want to go with. are there more sting options for baritone vs the bass vi? i suppose there arent much in flatwound options for either...

Your understanding is correct. Also, with appropriate strings you can use a Bass VI as a baritone (tuned A-A). I wouldn't say that scoring baritone strings is any easier than scoring BVI ones, the market is terrible at the moment. I'd kill for a readily available 15-80 set. If you're going with an EGC get one of those 32"-scale thingies, you can use bass strings on it and have proper tension.

Easy.
The lower it goes, the better.

All about tension my man! If you like a lot of tension I'd say go longer (TWSS), but if you like a little bit of slack when you bend strings go shorter. Also depends on your tuning!

I honestly didn't really feel comfortable with .14's on a 28" baritone, it just felt like it was going to snap. But at the same time that bigger scale seemed to NEED that big a gauge

Actually, LaBella makes a whole bunch of string sets for VI type instruments, including flats. I'll bring my Ultra VI when I come.

The Jaguar Bottom Master is 28.5" scale and is tuned E-e like a Bass VI. The strings are little bit floppy, but not too bad (I'm not sure which gauge strings are on it at the moment as I haven't changed them since I got it and don't play it all that much.)

They make strings for the Hellcat and Ultra, which cost about $7 and are too short for the BVI. Their Bass VI string are stupidly expensive.

I have a Custom Shop Bass VI incoming and I'm a little concerned about strings. Hard enough finding a nice set for a 32" bass, I imagine a 30" scale is that much more limited, total pain in the ass.

I did notice a D'addario XL Bass VI set for $10.50 tho, not too shabby, but they're only 24-84. Meh.

Just buy a single .95 bass string to replace the .84.The only difference between D'Addario singles for bass and guitar is the ball end.

Yeah, go with a Bass VI. Also, yeah....about strings...I have no fucking clue what to do. I'm thinking just buy bari strings and a bass A. I dig the 80-20 that's on my Agile VI. But my friend Mercy who only plays Bass VI uses the LaBella flats.
