With or without utilities?
Also, as per usual, Jrmy lays it down with the smart fire.

Also, remember, the dudes in Neurosis have day jobs. So do the guys in Oxbow. Making your living off of art is only one way to make art.

Yeah, I know of quite a few bands that have regular person jobs too. The point is to end up in one that doesn't feel like it's stealing my time away. I've thought about illustration, but I'm not sure what places to look for those kinds of jobs.

No, that's about right. Less'd be better though.
They used to say that you shouldn't spend more than a quarter of your income on bills, but I've always thought that was highly unrealistic.
I don't think rent falls into the "bill" section in that little breakdown. I was told 1/3 for rent, 1/3 for food and shit
If you don't like your current career path, see if you can go somewhere else you'd like with the current gig, then look for jobs there. Better than quitting and moving and then being in limbo.

I didn't actually mean all "bills", just rent & utilities.
Yep, NY's expensive.

I was born and raised here, I'm not sure I can adjust to anything else. I loathe this place and want to leave but I'm not sure I can. When I look at how cheap rent/houses are in the south or out west, and how many engineering opportunities there are, it does get me wondering...

You should try moving farther afield. It'll be good experience either way. You can always move back.
