Badass Yakuza dudes have those giant tats all over their backs, so now people are all weird about visible tattoos. Probably tats + scary foreigners is an even more potent double whammy.
You see, Yakuza tats are assault rifles, and ordinary tats are every other gun...

lol. pretty much that. i guess for the longest Tats = Yakuza. so even though i'm taller and paler than most people there by a BUNCH, there's that weird association.

they have Tat Only Onsen, which foreigners aren't going in because most are all Yakauza, all the time. then they have Foreigner Onsen.

and some places have private areas where it's just the people in your group. then tats don't matter.

mine don't look gangsta at ALL, but.... still. stigma and hierarchy are still huge issues most places out there.
