I never did, no. I'm saving up for a custom Dunwich, which should begin building in a months time, so I'll keep the money for that. Choosing a guitar is a lot harder than anything else due to their differences. An amp, once you've tried it, isn't going to change. And even trying one amp from one manufacturer will give you a really good idea how the others in the line-up will sound. For instance, if you like the Fender Deluxe Reverb characteristics, you know that pretty much all the Carr amps will sound fantastic to you. If you liked the Diezel Herbert you tried then you'll probably really dig the VH4 or D-Moll as they all have a very distinct similarity. But guitars vary wildly. Even one Custom shop Gibson Les Paul will be hugely different than another. So despite paying €3500, you're not gaining consistency or anything like that, so you need to try each one out. And therein lies the problem. I live in Ireland. We have Fender, Gibson, and Marshall and that's basically it. We HAD a Reverend dealer a six hour drive away, but they don't stock them any more.

Another issue is, should I pay a little more and have a custom guitar built to my specs—like the Wild Custom Guitar I posted—and potentially be disappointed by a guitar I won't be able to sell, or do I buy something like a Japanese Bacchus for even more money and retain resale value, whilst sacrificing on the ideal features and aesthetics, and also worrying about importing a guitar into the country? Or I could aim for the middle ground and buy a Reverend. They retain their value relatively well, shouldn't ever need upgrading, and are easier to get a hold of than the others. It's a hard knock life.
