Re: anybody ever have something shipped from craigslist?
Yeah I've bought stuff from a few people and asked them to ship it. The most expensive was $500 for a guitar. He was selling locally, a few states away, and I emailed him offering to paypal him the money and have him ship it to me. I understood there would be some risk for me, doing this, but I assumed that someone who is expecting to deal locally is probably expecting to do an honest deal, and hopefully won't change their mind and scam me. It worked out well. He was more afraid of me than me of him. But still I wouldn't suggest it. Every time I post something on CL I get like 10 fake replies; so, you know, bad guys are out there. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've only had good experiences with good people, in person and by mail, dealing in the musical instruments section of CL.
So, the people I've dealt with aren't offering to ship in the ad; I suggest it and ask if they'd be willing to, in my email response to their ad. I use paypal, and not the gift option; I don't know how good paypal is about settling claims, because I've never had to go to them to settle something, but at least leave yourself that option. Get their phone number and address and name and talk to them on the phone; try to get a feeling about whether they're sketchy or not. I feel better about doing deals with guys that are willing to give me their personal information. I guess that's my advice.
Of course the thing about craigslist is that there is usually something wrong with the gear, unmentioned in the ad; the question is of magnitude. I mean anywhere from a tiny chip in the paint, to real damage. Normally you can check out the stuff in person. By mail you have to guess and hope it's not too bad. My thinking here is that if they originally though someone would be looking over the item in person, then it's not too messed up. But ultimately it comes down to gambling on the goodness of humanity.

Yeah, I did a trade+cash on craigslist. The guy was in Alaska. My DSI evolver for some pedals and cash. We traded numbers and I actually was paranoid til he said he didn't want to do it anymore because he found an arrest record for me online. After I explained what that was about, the deal went super smooth.

paypal are good about settling claims, they just take too long doing it. i recently bought a few pedals off a newb to the VSE forum, he didn't send them and disappeared on me, they forced the refund, either out of his account if the money was still in there or pretty sure they'd lock his until he paid it off. if it was a small amount they'd just refund it not bothering since they make such a disgusting profit anyway. like morange said just make sure it's a purchase payment if it isn't someone you feel safe trusting. personal and paypal won't do anything for you.

not directly related to shipping, but a kid with the same job as me, in a different shop (phase docks) bought a lawnmower, a commercial walk behind deal, from a dude in ohio. keep in mind, our base is in atlantic city. he drove straight, for 30 some hours, with another dude along to catalog the insanity. the long and short in that only saved about $500. all that ass pain. did i mention it was broken and missing parts?

Yep. I've shipped stuff, and had stuff shipped to me with no problems.
Can't really guarantee you'll have the same experience, but thought I'd chime in.

Yea dude, don't get your hopes up, when people see "will you ship?" in response to a CL ad they always think scam, because people on CL are weird as shit most of the time. I have asked on a couple occassions and they alwqys stop responding after I tell them I am out of state.

Yeah. My mom was trying to sell a kayak on CL, and someone from Florida wanted her to ship it. What? Scam.
