Behndy Broke A Train...

Amtrak says a passenger train carrying nearly 200 people has derailed near Oakland, but there were no injuries.

fuck. that's sad. Chi Cheng from Deftones just passed away.

i was in a band when i was a kicken that played with Deftones a few times. they're from Sacramento so we used to see them all the time while they were blowing up. all of them were nice guys, Chi wasn't someone i knew well but he seemed like a great guy and you never heard anybody talking bad about him.

hope he's at peace now.

That gave me a sad. I don't talk much about influences,...but the Deftones and Chi influenced me greatly when I was a teenager. Probably the main reason I favored fingerstyle over pickstyle back then. Around the Fur came out around the same time I was in my first band. I was about the only one in that band that liked that record.

I had lost interest in the Deftones over the past couple of years; probably starting before White Pony's release, not that it's a bad record,...I was just listening to more mellow stuff when it came out. At any rate; I sorta rediscovered my passion for the Deftones and have had them on pretty heavy rotation here at la casa.

Some of their Finest Chi Era Work.

I remember reading an article in BP that Chi was a self proclaimed Deadhead.

As silly as it sounds; that justified my own love of jambands. Like I need justification,...but so many people are haters that knowing that a bassist in an alt metal band liked the Grateful Dead gave me the ability to be my own person and not be ashamed of my tastes.

He transcended labels and definitions and I think that is really important as an artist.

In fact,...listening to him, he actually seemed more like a jam bassist that just so happened to play in a metal band.

one of my favorite stories was China was rambling after a show in Oakland and he was saying, "how'd we hook up with Chi? me and Stephen (and the drummer? Andy? i forget his name.) were playing with the garage door open at somebody's parents house. we saw this asian guy with long hair walking by and ran up to him. 'do you play anything? a little bass? YOU LOOK LIKE YOU'RE IN DEATH ANGEL. GET IN HERE.' and.... yep. it stuck."

they really always seemed like super nice guys, only met/hung out with them a tiny bit, but they were the local GOOD metal band that wasn't metal. that when they blew up it was so different than Green Day's. you knew Green Day was going to have t-shirts in malls for all the normal kids to wear.

to me Deftones being ao popular so long is an oddity like Primus being popular. so much love for that band.

that's a great story. it's like the way Michael Clarke wound up as the drummer in the Byrds...McGuinn and Hillman were walking down Sunset Strip and said "hey, you look like a drummer...(which at that point meant 'you look like Dennis Wilson, a lanky blond dude that girls will like')...wanna be in our band?"

i don't know what to say about Chi, other than that at least he doesn't have to suffer any more...he's either in a better place and/or finally free.

oh man. that was kinda depressing. i don't talk shit about bands, but we just went to see Orgy at a smaller club in SF. there were three bands before them, not really my kind of music (when did metal turn into silly theatrical motley crue styled glam stuff? with screamo?), but one of them sold their act really well and were fun to watch.

but Orgy. OOG. i guess it was only the singer from before, and his voice was just blown OUT. he was getting out of breath by the first song, 80% of the melodies were sung by the bass, keys or guitar guys.... and the mix was AWFUL. it was just thin ass vocals with booming bass drum and tinny plastic sounding drums. could barely hear keys or guitar, bass was gone on every band all night.

oof. we stayed for about 4 songs. BAD.
