Need help from ILF Bros with move to Switzerland

Post by jfrey »

So I've contacted a bunch of job placement agencies, sent resumes to them, tried contacting the same agencies here (those of them that have US offices) to go through them (they just refer me back to the Swiss offices), etc.

Having a super hard time even just getting people to acknowledge I've contacted them, let alone actually try to help me out with my job search.

What do I do?

Anyone have any contacts? Advice? Ideas?

I've mostly sent out emails, and requests via their websites, but I've started calling now also. I just get told that they'll get back to me shortly.

I let them (the offices here that I have contacted) know, and was told that they can't do anything about their international offices.

What sorts of jobs are you looking for over there? And how long are you planning on being there? Annnnnnnnnnnnd where exactly in Switzerland will you be?

Graphic design, Flash, HTML/CSS, eLearning. Anything in that. (I'm open to anything else though so long as I can get a work Visa from it)

2+ years

Thank you.

I've gone through those a lot. Still not finding a ton in my field.

Rant:
NSFW: show
Are there no fucking jobs in Switzerland? When I'm looking for jobs in Boston I can easily find 10+ every day to apply to. In a week of job hunting for Geneva I've found 15. Total.

I'm interested in this just to see how it goes. I've often wondered what it takes to move to another Country.

You've picked possibly the most difficult place in the world to move to...
My sister moved there last year, and had could only do so because her fiance worked and lived there already (he works for the international court of human rights but even then had to spend a while living in France and hopping the boarder each day for work before he could get a place in Geneva). She had to gain a Swiss government approved qualification in French and provide all sorts of financial guarantees, and on top of all that she says it's boring as hell.
Most people who work in Geneva live in France, for all the reasons you'll continue to come across. There's an awful lot of Europe which is nicer in every way (IMHO) and much easier to move to.

This is such a pain in the ass. If someone, somehow, helps me get a job in Geneva (and that company would have to help me get a work permit) I will give them a guitar or bass of mine, of their choice.

Dunno what Switzerland is like but if its anything like here I'd say the labour market is a lot less fluid than the States, and that if you aren't speaking German or French you might find it hard to compete. But if there was a field where you can get around on English, you're in it.

Careers/employment offices at universities tend to suck, bit what about getting in touch with the local universities and seeing what they can do?

Another option is to study something for a semester and look for work- develop contacts during that time. Not good for bank account, but a good way to buy some time to gain local knowledge.

I've decided that I am most likely going to do this. I may also apply to a Master's program. My family will help out with costs if they're for education.
