BIIIIIIIIIG TUUUUUUUNES! (Kickstarter alternative)

Post by jrmy »

So, a few months ago, a friend of mine sent me a message asking me to check out his new project, being a guy involved in both startup ventures and design and music (what can I say? All of my hobbies involve losing money!). The gist was pretty cool - Kickstarter is great for raising money, but does nothing for production or distribution. So if you're a band who can raise the cash, getting the albums duplicated and sent out (to say nothing of accompanying merch) was totally on you. I know a ton of projects that stalled out exactly there. His idea was to build a platform specifically to solve that problem. So today he emailed me that the platform is out of Beta, and funding it's first campaigns.

I haven't dug into the guts of it yet, but it looks pretty compelling, and my friend knows his shit around this sort of thing. Might have to take them up on trying it out when the band finally gets the goddamn album done...

Yeah, they only just launched live, so those might be the only funded campaigns right now! Also, note: both funded campaigns are from ska bands... and my friend who started it runs a ska label. So I suspect those were the guinea pig cases that took him up on it.

Let me know if anyone has questions specific to the process - he's writing the F.A.Q., and I'm peppering him with things to write about. :p

EDIT: Ooh, minimum run of 100 CDs. I thought it was higher than that. That could be doable for my shizz.

I will be sure to ask him that. A deep understanding of the calendar year is essential to creating a new web platform.

Also, there's no ska-puns on that website.

Regardless, I dig.
