I've been on a big sci-fi kick lately.

Kobe abe rules. Ive read woman in the dunes (which i absolutely loved) and various short stories. Please update us chankgeez with how that boook is.

That book was a bit more unfocused than some of his others I've read. It's a little difficult to follow (or maybe I've just been distracted lately). I'm going to have to read it again.

As of late, he's been one of my favorite writers. Yeah, I loved Woman in the Dunes too. I started with that one as it's a natural one to start with. I've also read The Ark Sakura (liked better) and The Face of Another (liked but not as much as the others). I've got The Ruined Map and Secret Rendezvous, which I plan to read soon. I haven't read any of his short stories yet and'd also like to read some of his plays. I'd eventually like to make my way through most of his writings. That's how great of a writer I think he is.

I've read Gravity's Rainbow a few times and've never made it all the way through. Love Pynchon though. Good luck, bugzaney. What else've you been reading?

Indeed. I couldn't get past the first chapter(s?) on that one.

But his other book, the Fifty Year Sword, is quite good. It took me a bit to get used to the language/form, but it's very compelling. I couldn't put it down.

Finished the Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.
Finished the Farseer Trilogy and Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobb.
I'm up to date on Sword of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.

And now I'm reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson.
So far, so good. I just started the third book.

Before my wizards/swords/sorcery kick I had been reading a lot of David Foster Wallace and Haruki Murakami.

Having a degree in creative writing should probably force me to lean to the snobby side but, fuck it, guys, I just love fantasy. There's plenty of fine writing in genre-fiction.

Howl is fine. Ginsberg is okay but I don't really read him. But I really disliked Kerouac. I found On the Road to be some of the most boring drivel I've read.

I like Bukowski just fine.

I'm more into the magically real and post-modern. Which probably explains my love of the fantasy genre. I couldn't care less about sci-fi. But fantasy? You want that guy to cast spells? Count me in.

starting Lamb by Christopher Moore. s'posed to be way funny. which is good. i watch too many angry and violent and depressing movies.

good to have balance.

Check out Patrick Rothfuss, he's written two fantastic books. Hanging out for the third. Re sci-fi: if you can't dig Alistair Reynolds' Blue Remenbered Earth then sci fi isn't your thing, but if any book was going to convert you it'd be that one.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to look into it.

It'll be some time though since I feel like I have a really hard time getting back into the Malazan books if I put them down for too long. They're very dense, in the best possible way.

Lamb is fucking hilarious. Moore is one of my dad's favorite authors.
