I dont really ever play clean these day and I mostly play guitar so I don't really get GASed up for a comp. But if Juan says so...hmmm maybe i should change my mind. but for realz, I like compression on the bass a lot - for certain sounds.

they also help control things when you have a bunch of filters and dirt all going at the same time, most filters don't have a output volume control so a comp keeps stuff from fucking your amp up

Well, I've been playing a lot of slide and harmonics lately and I never play clean. So, it'd be compressor into lots of dirt. I do like to hear some note articulation though. Still not completely sold on compressors, but, you're right, they have their place under certain circumstances.

I think comps are really fun to play with sometimes. Not always to hear. I play a strat and you can really get a stratty sound with a compressor (although I don't do super stratty sounds much). Mostly, I use them for boost type things into a lot of gain and it really pushes it more than just a level boost, i think. And like Juan said, its really cool to get all those string noises and such. Sounds so awesome with a lot of reverb.

And Ive owned a few comps but they've all seemed a lot of the same to me, imo. Just a volume and then ratio knob could do the same thing. I had a pigtronix one once and I felt like the mix and ratio knobs were pretty interchangeable. Like low mix, high compression felt like high mix, low compression and stuff like that. But I know people get more into it. I'm not picky. I think ryan summit has one that he digs a lot.
But I would just start with a dyna comp or something to see how it works. That's like $30-$50? And to my experience, most comps are pretty similar. Again, I'm not picky or have had many :/

I think a compressor with a 2+ band eq could be really useful. I know they exist too, just sayin

Thanks, zRoobertez. I've actually got a cheap compressor. I've fooled around with it a little. It's not too bad, but like some cheap compressors, it's really noisy.

I see. I guess I lucked out cause I've never had problems with compressor noise really, even with single coils.

Bass player here. I never turn off my Empress Compressor, sounds too good and the blend knob is very useful.

Dirt is already compressing your signal a fair bit. Unless you're going for that WOAH, COMPRESSION! effect then I don't think it'll add much.

Bass player here. I never turn off my Empress Compressor, sounds too good and the blend knob is very useful.

I was about to say, from all the compressor demos I've watched, nothing seems as good as the empress compressor to my ears

Dirt is already compressing your signal a fair bit. Unless you're going for that WOAH, COMPRESSION! effect then I don't think it'll add much.

True, but Dirt is clipping the transients, while compressors are useful for taming them and "beefing up" your base tone+sustain while maintaining its clean character.

Compressors are also helpful if you have a lot of finger noise, but they can (and typically do) raise the overall noise floor. I really think their negative rep is from "too much of a good thing" where a little can go a long way...

I think they're generally better suited on bass over guitar, but they typically work best for me up front in the signal chain...in any application.

The Effectrode PC-2A was the last compressor I bought, and the 1 year anniversary is coming up...the longest I've hung onto a compressor.

No bad sounds in it.

not quite, its only 5mm ply on the front, it locks into place when up like that (via the white capscrew you can see to the left of the Smallstone in the 3rd pic)
and locks shut via a little slidebolt on the side (just under the input of the Morley)

wanted a bit of protection from the drunken crowd, as most of the local venues dont have a "stage" as such, so this prevents them stumbling onto my pedals. and as a bonus makes an awesome footrest while playing too

is pretty heavy though (heavier than my Marshall 4x12)

I've shifted a bunch of stuff off my board to make room for the Meatsmoke. I've also got an EBS Valvedrive away for repair and two pedals that have gone missing in transit in shipping to Australia All going well, I'll add a Baby Thundaa and an Arc Green Pi to this setup. First time I've ever had issues with USPS shipping but seeing there are two missing, I'm hoping its just delays. Can't see the Valvedrive fitting on my board and it probably will be overkill now. Eventually I'll get rid of some dirt that doesn't gel as well with the Meatsmoke and maybe add a phaser.
