yes. You could get away with no biasing them but, rule of thumb is that you always bias. Only other problematic thing is that replacing 2 tubes means that you will have relative mismatch between the 2 pairs since u most likely only have 1 bias control. Its kind of like having 2 tires on ur car burn out and then u need 2 new ones, there will be mismatch between the 2 old ones and the 2 new ones.

Done accepted dat request and it's quotes like these that just reaffirm what a good decision that was. Now I've got a good mix of Nebula and Fu Manchu going while I tackle some shitty homework and things are a million times better.

Does that mean that I should change all four or just bias the 2 to match the others? I've never had to change power tubes as they've lasted me more than infinity time since I usually don't crank an amp. I tend to play clean and let distortion pedals do the rest.

on 90% of most commercial amps there i only 1 bias control which means that you can adjust the bias to all four tubes at once. thus u cant bias only 2 tubes, u are going to be biasing all 4. I suggest replacing all of the tubes since its just a matter of short time before all the old ones die. I suggest replacing the power tubes atleast 1 time a year minimum.

From what i hear on the youtube clips, i don't care too much for the crunch setting as i like the cranked overdrive setting...it does good distortion tone without sounding too modern and fizzy-thin.

Be interesting to hear from you that have tried it, or own one. As i will need a distortion pedal on my board soon, once I'm done with the fuzz and reverb section.

The SLOstortion is great. The midrange knob is amazing fun to tweak. It works like the Dr. Scientist Elements, where you can elicit thick guttural sounds or tight and focused sounds. I'd love to pick one up, but I just don't have the money. Does it sound like a Soldano SLO100? Yeah, but it's still a pedal and still limited as such.

Cool...i need to work out how i can get some more cash for it too...but like you say, its never going to be a SLO100...but i think its gets pretty close, unlike most pedals that try to emulate amps, this is one the good ones; again, i am basing this off youtube vids so far...will have to make a trip to an out of town guitar shop to take a look. Even though i work 2 minutes from the famed Denmark street guitar shops, i hate trying stuff in those shops, not only do they have so much attitude, but as soon you want to try something they assume you want to buy it and its a fuckin negotiation just to leave the shop without buying it!

Actually, no. Not in real life. By that I mean not in hundred watt stack world. It's a nice pedal and all and I have no doubt that it gets the small amp studio gangstas tingling in the ol' hangdown but it's a far cry from the realness. I have never seen a youtube of the thing so that's not what I'm going by here.

As far as the two bad tubes in an Orange goes, the guys over at Soldano claim that the earliest OR's had a faulty phase inverter design and that two power tubes will get run way harder than the other two and in turn fail. From what they've said this is only in the earliest of earlies (Sergio I think you have a '69? if so that'd qualify) and the Orange people (Matamp? I don't know my history very good) fixed it fairly early on as well. Those guys (Soldano) treat this like common knowledge but I haven't seen much talk around the web about anything other than pre'74 and post '74 PI design which is apparently a different issue altogether. If you think this may be the problem and you don't find info that gets you anywhere you might try calling Soldano on the phone. 206-781-4636

Interestingly the Post 74' scheme on OAFG is the Matamp GT120 from the 70s while the pre-74 stuff is an AC coupled cathodyne. I prefer the Matamp design. The main difference is that the Matamp design is DC coupled and the Orange one is AC coupled. Now the OrMats also used the Matamp design as well since they were built by Matamp. By 72' they changed from the Matamp design to the AC coupled and by 74' they converted back. So overall i am not sure what they mean by it being faulty to be honest.
