Ripping All My CDs

Post by hbombgraphics »

So Recently scored an Ipod classic
It rules a bunch,
I was one of those people that carried two giant CD cases in my car (made more sense when I had the murder van)

I am now in the process of ripping all my music into i-tunes: Which is taking forever
125 albums in and still cruising

I am coming across some music that I don't love anymore but I have 80 gigs so I am just ripping everything just in case.

How do you guys do this?
Do you just toss everything in and hope for the best?
Are you selective?

I do plan on throwing in all my records at some point as well.

The other issue is that I have all my music sorted by genre, and right now I am just ripping grunge music, and I am pretty sure I own all of it.
Just ripped better than ezra and thought, why am I doing this? :picard:

thoughts?

I was fairly selective when I ripped mine, but I kept all of my CDs (to my wife's consternation). Periodically I find a gap in what I want to listen to, and go pull from the stacks.

Now that I buy digital as much as if not more than physical, it's not such a big deal. Now my issue is backing it all up!
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Yeah I actually had to do this twice. The first time I did it was when I got my first MacBook. It took a week to rip all of the CD's I had at the time onto my computer. Something stupid like 300 CDs. Then about a year and a half later the hard drive got wiped. So I had to download an extractor that took all the songs from my iPod and put them back on my computer.

I wasn't picky at first about what I put on, I just put it all on there and let it sit for a good while. Then I periodically went back through and deleted albums that hadnt been listened to after a few months.

Right now I have something like a week and halfs worth of music on my laptop which is a bit excessive. But, you know. All about the variety man

can you cook a CD drive??????
The obvious answer with any spinning mechanical piece of plastic that the good folks at HP built is yes, but I should probably let it rest.

I did start with what was in my small cases which is pretty much the allstar team of my CD's Cattle Decapitation/The Sword And for some reason Cyprus Hill
but now I am into the big books, I have 80gigs to fill!!!!!!!

I am now seeing the great advantage of digital.

In the future I will probably never buy CD's

fortunately I am doing a mind numbing project this morning for work, while my daughter watches cartoons

You think you have a tough time. Try ripping 600 cds. GOD! I've been collecting cd's since I was a teen and literally have around 600. Fucking crazy.

as i listen to albums i delete any tracks that i dont like / are too boring, if thats a lot of the tracks then i can compile a single artist to a single album without the padding
if i dont have enough to make 'an album' of a single artist i'll make up various artist compilations for all the bits and pieces and random singles, arranged by genre/feel for the different compilations

i dont want to have any tracks i dont like on my mp3 player, unless its someone new i dont know yet

i browse by artist>album>(and the player then does alphabetical), so if its someone with loads of albums i'll often ammend the year at the front of the album tag name, so it'll be like:
75 - Caress Of Steel
76 - 2112
77 - A Farewell To Kings
etc

i go through every track and album and make sure all the tags are right

if there is a load of baggage in a track, like 10 minutes of silence before the 'hidden track', or its really long with dead sections that i dont like, then i'll cut them out with mp3directcut.
like 'reach down' by temple of the dog, i love the album and the track but i cant take the 5 minutes of tedious guitar solos at the end so i faded it out

This is a topic I'm interested in.

I have thousands of CDs. I was ripping them all into ITunes. Then I stalled. I've no more space left on my hard drive.

I've been meaning to drop the entire iTunes library on to a separate drive. Haven't done it yet. No idea how to do it.

Has anyone ripped CDs onto two drives simultaneously? I wanna do that so I have it all backed up. (TWSS)
