if you can solder, putting a Fender-style guitar together is pretty simple. it's the setup that's really a pain. when you buy a pre=built Fender, they've decided what all the correct tolerances are; when you build one yourself, you have to figure out how to set everything up (the truss rod, the bridge, pickup heights, etc.). it took me about two days to assemble my parts-o-strat, but weeks to get the setup sorted. in the past i've said that one great thing about Fender guitars is that they can make any schmuck with a screwdriver and an Allen key feel like a luthier

Seriously though, I've done a few Yuri Landman instrument workshops, and it's been no trouble at all when starting with good parts. Seems like as long as the neck and frets are good and the scale length and neck pocket matches up you should be good to go. (Grossly over-simplified, but yeah.)

(Basically a regular neck, tuners and pickups and everything else from the hardware store per Yuri's design. Took about 4 hours to put together.)

A handy beginner's tip for drilling bridge holes is to move the bit like you're writing yr ABCs with it...uh, wait...
