Rhythm circuit mods

Post by DarkAxel »

hey, guys

as i found out today, my jazzmaster might need some rewiring... when we're on that, i thought about doing something with the rhythm circuit, since i don't use it that much, because it's a bit too muffled for my taste

has anyone tried anything? making it a strangle switch like on jaguar? have it set for both pickups out of phase? wouldn't both be damn cool? :!!!:

Strangled out of phase Jazzmaster pick-ups would sound pretty awesome I bet...

so the classic second and fourth positions on a strat are out of phase, right?

series or parallel? because i'm thinking about that sound... somewhere in between the prog rock with jazzy parts, we play some funk as well :)

Strat pickups are in parallel and they are actually electronically in phase. It just happens that the physical positioning senses the strings at different peaks and nulls that happen to sound a lot like out of phase bridge and neck pickups on other guitars.

My Guild Detonator, a late 80s super-Strat lite kinda thing has neck-middle single coils that don't quite nail the Strat in-between sound because the spacing is wrong. (When I get it back up on its feet, I'm going to probably wire it so I never have to notice this deficiency again, maybe putting the bridge pickup in the middle switch position.) But it has a bit of an out-of-phase vibe. And guitars with out-of-phase neck and bridge don't all sound really in the in-between Strat zone, either. Worth experimenting, though, for sure.

One thought if you do out-of-phase -- leave a volume roller so you can tweak the relative volume of pickups. There's a lot of colors that can be had. People who chase the out-of-phase Peter Green Les Paul sound report that it's not worth doing without two volume controls.

thanks for the input, but now i don't know whether to go with a strangle switch or an out of phase setting :D

Jazzmasters are pretty plunky and bright sounding guitars as it is. If I wanted to mod my rhythm circuit I'd probably go with with series/parallel rather than phase switching.

Also, hit up Offset Guitars, lots of Jazzmaster and Jaguar wiring info on there.

This is always a fun mod.

Turns the bridge pickup into a jazzmaster style with a P-90 flavor. Turning on the old Rhythm circuit engages a second coil set turning it into 2 P90s stacked in the bridge... ULTIMATE HEAVIEZ

holy shit that is nice :) i have to say though - i feel pretty good about the bridge single coil and it can get pretty damn heavy on its own
