Books on Record Labels

Post by Snowblind »

I have to write a report on a book in my economics class and I want to write about independent record labels and their effect on the music industry. Does anyone know of a book that could fit what I am looking for? I've been reading "Our Band could be your life" but I dont know if it gives enough detail about the actual labels themselves. All help is appreciated. I would also be open to book recommendations that regard the effects of music piracy.

Not really a narrative book, but the now defunct label Simple Machines put out a guide to putting out your own record back in the early 90's. Basically, if you wanted to know how to DIY it back then, this was your primary resource:

I think you can download a pdf there.

Also, the chapter on Mudhoney in" Our Band... " gets pretty deeply into the Sub Pop story.

EDIT: also, check Amazon - I found books on Motown, Blue Note, Chess Records, Creation Records, and K Records in there in a quick search.
