What is the best affordable way to ship International from the US with tracking?
I know you can sometimes use the Customs # with USPS First Class or declare a low value and use Registered Mail but is there any reasonably priced ($20 or so) method that you can use while insuring for the actual value and getting a real tracking # and Delivery Conformation?
Today, I checked on a pedal sized box (2lb - 6"X 5"X 5") from Florida to Italy. USPS was $50 while UPS and FedEx were both $100.

I don't understand why i can send a Pedal registered to the US via dt. Post at 6-9 EUR... And it cost more shipping sth. to haki in belgium - there is nö ocean in between... Shipping Rates is beyond me... 4 Pedals from eqd 45$, One Pedal from us 18$, prymaxe less than 6$ Whatever...

You're not going to get tracking and insurance on an international box 20 bucks, sorry. It's in the 30-something range for most int'l shipping I've done, using USPS Priority Int'l. That's basically the best you're gonna do.

Yeah, I get that. I guess my question is more why can't you get tracking on USPS First Class International or something similar? I don't really get how the speed of the delivery correlates to the ability to track.

I think Prymaxe and others can ship International a lot cheaper because they get a special commercial rate.

It's about the same from Australia to the US. I was looking at a Maton on eBay and they wanted $259 to ship.

Generally, it costs me about $30 to ship internationally.
USPS is showing a 2lb box to Italy (no matter the size) is about $40 for priority mail (which has tracking).
The USPS "large video box" is a cheap flat rate internationally ($17), and requires less customs forms, but there's no tracking... which I found out after the first time I used it. Still, it's as cheap as first class, and still as fast as priority.

I was told that tracking was extra on Priority but I seem to get a different story from each USPS employee I ask.
I sent a WET reverb to Belgium and the lady said the only way to get it there with tracking was Express. It ended up being $54 after she originally said it would be $48. She weighed it again once all the Customs forms and shit were attached and said that it now weighed over 2lbs and added another $6. I would have stayed and argued but I had to shit BAD!

Honestly, don't listen to USPS employees at the post office, they don't know what the hell they're talking about. Every one I've ever asked says that there's no tracking in Priority Intl. But there is. They just don't advertise it. Just take the Customs form number and plug it into the tracking website, and voila, you can track it. The Post Office just doesn't train their employees well.

use a shipping forwarder on larger purchases i got my t40 shipped for like $150-180 or something via TNT and it came super fast after clearing customs. Guitars based on size were like $80-100ish depending on weight and box size i'm guessing cheaper if the neck was removable.
The insane cost of shipping is why I flat out refused to ship most things internationally in the past. Thankfully I invested in some perfectly sized boxes that are small enough to ship my instruments and pedals First Class (around $4.50 to Canada). I don't know of another means to ship internationally on the cheap sadly...
They do not track priority international packages outside of the US, as I recall. The number that is on the customs forms work to track it until it leaves our shores. The only way to really truly track international packages is through Express Shipping. UPS and FedEx usually cost about 3x more for intl shipping, so we don't use them.
USPS is always cheaper than FedEx/UPS in my experience. First Class international is the cheapest, and I've never had an issue with it. Delivery time seems to be 10-12 days. Though lots of guys go for Priority or Express.
I think I've had ONE international USPS-shipped pedal get lost in the mail...in over 4 years.
Re: tracking, yeah, First Class international is trackable. USPS doesn't update ANY of the tracking that well, but First Class is generally just as trackable, and updated just as much.
Do you want the tracking as a delivery confirmation method? Cause tracking for actual tracking is a waste, updates way too slowly to be useful.
Speed wise it's all a wash. Packages that were shipped Express have been stuck in customs for weeks while the cheapest versions would get here within a week. Though that will depend on how the customs in your destination country operate. The only way to get something to The Netherlands in less than 4 days is to use FedEx, DHL or UPS as they file the paperwork for customs upon shipping and thus avoid any delay when the package arrives.
