That is the sad state of reality my friend.

D.o.S. wrote:That said, the public is retarded. The Tea Partiers in the House are there doing exactly what their voters want them to do... a couple years ago my home state's legislature (Maine) passed a law allowing gay marriage certificates when the people didn't want it, and it was subsequently overturned by a popular vote--not because Mainers don't want gay people to enjoy marriage benefits (as we saw last night, when we voted to reinstall them), but because they didn't want the government passing laws without putting them to a vote.

On the one hand--that makes sense. You want your representatives to represent you.

On the other hand--we just voted to put reinstate something that we'd repealed because we didn't like that our elected officials went over our heads, even though a majority of the state supported it.
:picard:

While it is definitely a facepalm moment atleast they stood up against the elected officials who pushed laws on them. Maybe, just maybe, by some small infinitesimal glimmer of hope your representatives learned that if they let their people vote that the laws would pass and that they don't need to push the laws on them. But that would mean that they really care about their public, which I unfortunately have no confidence in believing.

There's an explanation for why people in government, especially Congress, don't necessarily do what people want. To put it simply, there are two types of representative behavior: delegates and trustees.
A delegate is essentially a man of the people. He does what his constituency wants. These people are usually career politicians.
A trustee acts for what they (or party, whoever) want, for the "good of the people." So their constituency has to trust they would do the necessary thing, whether or not it is popular. Naturally this is a risky style, and often doesn't lead to reelection.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. You can hate both. But that's just difference in style.
In the end you can't make everyone happy. Some will support the decision, some will oppose it, some will think it didn't go far enough.

Uggghhh...The object of power is to simulate power. Marijuana's illegal, but people still smoke it, thus the law doesn't carry any real power. So why not legalize it since the "law" isn't working as a deterrent? Because if marijuana were legalized nationally, it would not only eliminate an entire element of law enforcement (reducing the physical manifestation), but in relinquishing an aspect of it's projection of power it weakens the simulation of power the government is trying to maintain.

Apply that to our now non-existent space program. What's fascinating about space travel? Going to some other planet? No, it's the perfection of every element that was necessary to get there. Everything has to function exactly as intended and necessary, which leaves no room for the influence of power because power can't exist in that environment.

Boosh. It's all a charade that doesn't matter, so enough with the goddamn politics talk.

It's great that it's legalised and would ease up a lot of problems in those areas, though I don't smoke and wouldn't even if it was legalised here.
