I was just in the Raleigh / Durham NC area and was blown away by the sheer number of great bands out there. I have no idea about standard of living, or available jobs, but there were some cool bars in Raleigh, and plenty of cute girls. And definitely a good number of crazy / experimental / doomy / noisy / shoegazy bands.
