Off Topic: Comp for video editing?

Post by snipelfritz »

What is a basic/cheapish desktop I could get for video editing/production at acceptable quality level?

What is important in a comp for doing this? PC or Mac? What software? I've been using the same MacBook for 5 years, but it's slow as shit now. I figure I should just get a brand new desktop and teach myself to direct, edit, and produce video if I'm ever going to get a job in the area I'm going into. What should I learn?

I'm really kind of clueless on this, but I think it would be a good way for me to turn all my wasted time into time improving myself.

i'm not a video expert by any means, but i think your two most important things would be RAM and Graphics Card.

final cut
adobe premiere, adobe after effects
sony vegas

are some good programs

Don't skimp on the processor. RAM can be upgraded pretty cheaply.

Any video work that I've done (and enjoyed doing) has been on a Mac. I don't get on with windows all that well for doing anything productive. It'll run games, but for any sort of...anything else, I use an iMac.

A base iMac or MacBook Pro will do the job just fine. You can also save an extra bit if you go with a refurb, which is basically a new Mac without the fancy box.

I use both pc and mac, but for processor intensive 3D and video it's always been a dual Xeon machine. Currently a quad-core 3.2 with 16GB of Ram.

I use Premiere and AftterFX on a regular basis.
