OT: Computer Halp

Post by Moustache_Bash »

So, I've been having problems with getting on the internets. My laptop will connect to network, but won't have any internet access. This happens about once every other week. Sometimes when I unplug the modem, it fixes everything. Other times, I do nothing and it just fixes itself in a few hours. Although today, it wasn't giving me any internet access. So, I did a system restore to a lil' bit back and now everything is working okay.

Anyways, my real question is, how do I restore my computer to a blank slate? I made a back up disc (I don't if I'm using these terms correctly) that I wrote "Acer Windows 7 64 Bit" How do I use this disc?

Sorry for being n00b, I hope this made some sense. And thank you for any help :hello:

You should be able to open that disc and click through the prompts to reformat your drive if you decide to go that route.

Do some reading about the process before, but it's not hard. It just takes about an hour.....

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Witht that disc, the computadora only allows me to "Open Folder to View Files". Then I click on that, and choose from two folders: Boot and Sources. And there is also one document: bootmgr. Then when I click on any of those things I get "Windows can't open this file, blahblah What do you want to do?" and I get two choices.

So I tried loading it through setup when the computer is turned on, and I got no where. Perhaps, I didn't let this back up disc burn completely/properly....

Yeah it doesn't sound right. The disc should be bootable and probably even have an autorun pop up when you put it in the drive. Do you have a backup assistant in your machine to let you burn another one?

Restore disks only boot on system start. Put the disk in and restart your computer.

Also, before doing anything, make sure your personal files are backed up elsewhere. A "back up disk" doesn't save YOUR files - it just lets you restore the operating system itself to a basic install.

How old is the router and are you having issues with other computers on the wireless?

My girlfriend had a problem with this, and it turned out that her router was almost ten years old and just dying.

I'd put my money on this or the modem. I had the same problem, and a new modem fixed it. Though it did happen again last week and turned out to be something wrong with the cable. If your computer is connected to your wireless network, but not the internet, it's probably not a problem with your computer.

Exactly. If it was the computer, you would (probably) not get any internet at all, as a setting somewhere in the network configuration would be fucked up, and that stuff doesn't fade in and out.

Holy cow. Restore disk for network connectivity issues?

First step when internet connectivity drops is to see if you can connect to your router/modem. If you can, the problem probably isn't your computer-- it's probably between the modem/router and the rest of the world.

Next step is to check a website. If that doesn't work, go to a website by IP address -OR- ping an IP (I ping 8.8.8.8, Google's DNS servers). This rules out a DNS issue. If that works, your router/modem lost its DNS, and you need a different DNS server.

There are many other things you can test, none of which require you to use the restore disk, which is the last resort after you have tried everything else.

Good luck. :)

Yeah, I don't put any important stuff on this computer so I don't give a poo if I lose anything (hence why I was gun ho to restore the computer).

The modem is only a few years old. Less than 5. Reason why I thought it was my computer is because the DVD player in this house was able to connect to the internet and stream a movie yesterday, while my laptop was doing nothing.

It could totally be the provider, though. I think the TV, and internet come through the same thing and I live way out in the boonies so these things can be temperamental. SO, I guess I'll just deal with this moody issue as a normal thang.

Thanks for your input, everybody!

If you've already tried plugging and replugging the modem and router, call the provider. On a couple occasions they've been all "LOLOOPSWEDISCONNEKTEDURMODEM T_T" So sometimes they can just turn it back on...

Yeah, I've had that happen too.
