Any car guys out there?

Post by Isher »

I'm a bit of an autophile myself, slightly. I don't sit here and fawn over high dollar exotic cars, but I know a little and love automobiles in general.

But it absolutely grinds my gears (pun intended) when I hear someone driving a "muscle" car (if you can call a modern V6 Camaro a muscle car compared to a '70's Camaro with a big block Chevy) that has some sort of obscure muffler such as a Flowmaster 40 series or Cherry Bomb Turbo muffler, only to be assaulted with horrible buzz and shrill noise. Just sounds absolutely terrible to me.

Not to slam V6 guys, I've heard some V6's that sound just as beastly as V8's, and I am a 4-cylinder guy myself. But I can't stand tacky-sounding exhausts. You'll never hear my dinky little 1.5L Honda buzz and sound like bees in a trashcan. I hear about 20 of them a day driving by dorm room window.

I'm talking about people that stick mufflers on factory pipes and resonators and expect an awesome sound.

It took me 2.5" diameter stainless steel tubing, a glasspack for a resonator and a woven-fiber perforated core muffler to get the deep throaty sound.

I was a big car guy about 10 years ago when I first got out of college. I've always been into the Japanese sports cars, but not as much into the whole tuner car thing. When I got my first job after college and found I was making a good money, I promised myself I was going to buy a Mazda RX-7, which had been my favorite car on earth since high school. I found one in fantastic shape and bought it immediately. I loved that damned car. It had so much fucking balls, it is still the most thrilling car I've ever driven, and I'm including Vettes, Porsches, and even a Ferrari. Nothing handled and kicked ass like that fucking Mazda. Sequential twin turbos on a rotary, and only about 2700 pounds? Fuck yeah.

I'm a pretty big car guy. I'm mostly into British sports cars and oddball older Japanese cars, but I love a gold old hunk of American iron too. And I like 4x4s too, Landcruisers, Landrovers, old Jeeps, etc. Not that I have a particularly illustrious car ownership history; I drive a 2001 VW Jetta, and I have a '91 4Runner that's been sitting uninsured for nearly a year (hopefully be putting insurance on it for a weekend camping trip soon though), and the coolest car I owned in the past was an '88 RX-7.

I do however have a dad that's big into Lotus. He has a '73 Europa, '97 Esprit V8, and a 2010 (I think) Elise. So much fun.

I'm into cars, but not muscle cars or high-tuned imports. I love beaters that don't quit. First car was a Volvo 244 and I miss it dearly. It only could go up to 80 KPH but it always started up smooth. I now have a Focus that is an appliance.
I dream of having an 80's BMW or a Leyland or MGB but all are money sinks and don't fit with my cash-strapped world.

I've never considered a car with a V6 a muscle car. Some of them that had turbos on them could slide in but for the most part I've always considered them V8's.

Wow, cool to see another RX7 guy on here!I used to have a black '93 RX7 with tan interior, took out the cats (was kinda weird how they had a pre-cat in addition to the catalytic converter) put in a straight down pipe midpipe combo, intake, intercooler, and fuel comp. That car just screamed, absolutely loved it. Sold it to a kid in Topeka a few years back, would love to own another one in the future.

Mine was a '94 R2, so it had the strut tower brace, the lower spoiler and the blacked-out interior. I kept it pretty much stock, although I did replace the airbox, which is a pretty basic mod. As I said, I've never been too big into the tuner thing. That was a totally badass car as it came out of the factory, so I didn't ever feel a need to mod it.

I sold it to some kid in Pennsylvania when I lost that job. I got more money for it than I paid for it, that doesn't happen very often.

Nice, I ended up getting what I paid plus what it cost me to have it shipped from the Lotus dealership in Michigan so it turned out fairly well. I started with the dp/mp because the cats were clogged up when I got it then just did the few minor things to keep it cool and get a bit more boost out of it. I had the '93 Touring model. Black car + leather seats = hot as hell in summer. Mine had the spoiler and the tower brace as well (think the brace was aftermarket when I bought it), sunroof and bose sound system. Was looking at an R1 but the guy wanted too much for the kind of mileage it had on it so I nabbed the touring.

My old '66 GTO had hookers and Hush Thrush sounded like music.

We're having wine and hot rods here again on the 25 of this month.
