The recording thread. bitches.

Post by htsamurai »

yo, so I'm makin this thread for any one whose got recording questions or wants to geek out on recording gear.
reason for that is that I'm not in a mood to join an overly pretentious recording forum when I'm already at home here :D

so whats your DAW of choice and why, interfaces, mics, pres, racks, plugins, whatever! lets talk yo

I'm using Ableton right now, waiting on Bitwig to see if it's everything I hope it to be, but I couldn't get an alpha/beta invite sooooooooo meh :/
eie pro for interface, with a pair (soon to be replaced) bx8d2's for monitors, been jonesing for the hs80m's for about a year now, just aint got the skrilla. they're not terrible, just a bit mid/lowmid heavy. which is great for listening, hip hop is great on these. but kinda hard to get an accurate mix out of these. I end up mixing a lot at work through hs80ms or on the shure srh840s, however they too are a bit heavy handed on the low end.
basically I wanna replace the m audios with the yamahas and the shures with dt880s.
first though I'm likely gonna pick up an AKG c214, get me a decent vocal mic. I'd love to get the c414 but if I'm gonna spend that money Id rather get the speaks
the most useful piece of gear I currently have for straight recording and mixing is the APC40, soooooooo ill. If anyones interested I'll record a short video as to why, so much usage out of it.

Maschine is the greatest thing for making beats or laying down grooves, and once I got used to it inside of ableton it was even cooler. At this point theres really no going back to anytihng else for me.
'MAYBE' BFD2 if I just need a simple beat and don't wanna get way into it, couple clicks or an .agr file and donesies...but maschine is just too cool
as for keys I'm just using an mpk mini, since I dont play keys and just use it for midi and sometimes for the pads (though maschine has the best pads I've ever used short of an mpc...), it's so damn portable.
/small rant

yo seriously, if you've any questions about gband, logic, protools or ableton hit me up. I'm certified in gband and protools, use ableton on the daily and know logic pretty well too so hit me up
this is half a chat it up thread, half a get help thang. <>3<3<3

We've always used Cubase, so we'll probably always use Cubase. I always found the interface so intuitive and I already know how to do everything I'd ever want to do in it, so I have no desire to learn a new one. We use Cubase to organize all the MIDI tracks, and use it along with a bunch of those MIDI Solutions splitters and mergers to trigger all synths and drum machines. And then we run all instruments into a Xenyz 1222 Mixer, feed the monitor out to the speakers in the room for jamming and the main out back into Cubase for when we want to record. Works beatifully.

I'm using Studio One ATM, still learning it's quirks after using Logic for years...
Why?
It sounds clearer/more open over all then logic, the midi control and how plugins are arranged and routed functions better and I can do everything I was using logic for. Also a few months ago Logic got corrupted on all my computers at the same time... and I had to reinstall... just can't trust it anymore.. The only thing I don't like about Studio One is the time line marker isn't as easy to fine tune.. one the other hand at least it doesn't have the annoying and rather abstract snap-toing that apple progams have...

Depends on my situation. I don't have a recording rig of my own, so I usually end up rigging some mixture of cables and okay mics into a line-in on my PC and recording into Vegas, or whatever I'm using at the moment.

Going in to record an album on the 15th of september. It's a pretty nice studio, and I'm hoping the guy lets me ask a thousand questions.

i'm sooo bad at using DAWs so i'm just going to lurk the shit out of this thread. i feel like the past year has been an on-off effort to learn ableton.

Has anybody tried the Presonus Audiobox USB? I'm thinking of picking it up when I actually need to start recording things.

I have a mac so i just use garageband. I just started using some crap keyboard i found as a midi control to try to work soft synth, if anyone knows how to automate synth controls such as frequency and resonance on garageband could probably save me a lot of headache. I just use it to lay out demos and for my own entertainment but its nice to know how to use it to its potential.

i mainly use ableton. been using it since live 5. recently switched setups from a mackie cr1604 and motu 828 to a mackie onyx firewire mixer thing for recording. nice and simple. however, recently ive been really diving into the 4 track tape on the op1. different way to do things. lots of fun.

was also a little salty (not really) i didnt get a bitwig invite!

Cool idea.

I've been a freelance engineer (not full time or anything crazy, but...) for around 10 years now (much more active in the last 8 or so)...

I use Pro Tools. Pretty modest setup now. Thinking of investing in a mobile setup, now that the studio space I shared with a friend is dead.

I use Garageband for black metal and stuff I need a drum machine for and use Audacity some other times for noise stuff. I've got 2 usb interfaces, one is stereo, the other is mono depending on what I'm doing. I usually record most noise stuff in one take in stereo and then go back and edit. On the other hand I usually record mono for guitar and bass unless I'm using a stereo delay and overdub

I don't have a real recording setup for guitar. I have drum mics and I always put together some ghetto recording setup if I want to record guitar. For my drums I use a two condenser overheads, and SM57 and an Audio Technica MB2-K for my snare(s) and some cheap-ish but good dynamic drum mics for the toms. A big dynamic mic for the bassdrum. I send everything to a Behringer mixer (the bigger one with a few effects built in), so the whole EQ-ing, adding reverb or stuff like that happens before the PC... I chose this route because it was cheaper than a big 10-Channel audio interface and I was already used to dial stuff in with knobs on a mixer. From the mixer it goes to a Behringer USB-interface (yep, got that in a package deal with the mixer) and I just use Audacity to record. Simple stuff... and effective.
