Yeah, there is a few different talks going on. Latency for midi triggered sounds coming out of a computer is pretty much a nonissue these days. This has me covered for my basic needs.
Sousa brought up the replacing the pedalboard idea. This does interest me too.
So does anybody have any tips on decreasing latency for a signal coming into th computer, effects being processed onto the signal, and then having the signal exit the computer to an amp?
Any NI Guitar Rig users, iRig users, People that do it in Ableton?

've only fucked woth Guitar Rig for a hinute. the dirt turned me off pretty quick, but i don't think that's what it's ging to excel at anyways.

Sousie's got a bud that runs the type of setup he's talking about wanting to try, so i could just be being a stodgy stick in the mud doober that's talking out his buttt pipes.

Honestly, I am still considering a VB-99. It isn't quite as verstile as Computer set-up could be, but it is versatile, it wouldn't crash, or have latency issues. I was going to get one, then I backed out, now I am considering it again. I could run my dirt and regular clean tone off of my regular magnetic pickups, cord coming out of the normal jack and then I could input that into the VB-99 so that the GK pickup, and what ever I am running from the VB-99 could come out in parallel with my normal pickup. I could have 3 parallel effects ( 2 effects and synth, whatever) chains running like this.
I would have to get over having the GK pickup and controller thing on my bass, and two cords coming off of my bass. I imagine that I could get over that. My bass doesn't have enough room inside to go with a piezo (GraphTec or whatever) pick up system.
Run the VB-99 set-up with the band, and the MidiBase, synths, and computer solo.

One thing to keep in mind with the processor speed thing, in case you didn't know, is that clock speeds are not necessarily comparable across different lines of processors. So something from Intel that's clocked at 1.5 ghz or whatever may or may not be faster than something from AMD at, say, 1.7 ghz. I haven't kept up with current gen processors at all, so I can't really give you recommendations, but there are plenty of sites out there that have detailed performance comparisons of pretty much every processor ever.

I have the 17 inch of that laptop and I can tell you it is more than enough to power VST's/music software. I work at Staples in our tech department and I can also tell you that Toshiba builds the most durable laptop as far as PC goes, followed closely by lenovo. I think you would be happy with that decision though.

I regularly play my guitar through a firebox into Ableton, processing a ton of effects/vsts, and back out through my monitors with no latency issues. All that while browsing the web on Firefox. :thumb: Granted, this is on my desktop, but my laptop is similarly spec'd and I haven't had issues there either. Both are HPs, dekstop is 2 years old, lappy was bought last year.

I have also been considering switching my setup to be more laptop/ableton based for mixing and all effects besides dirt. (digi dirt sucks.) I love the control you have over the delays and verbs, and put that with routing blending options on multiple tracks and it just blows me away.

So.....if I'm looking to get a laptop....and ALL I'm going to do with it is put Reaktor....Ableton.....maybe Guitar Rig.....mainly use it as a pedal board (with an Audio Interface and Midi Controller) and some for recording and soundscaping......but totally strip everything else from it and use it for nothing else.

Would this be overkill:

I mean, I want it to last a LONG time and have 0 latency.....just want to make sure I'm not spending way more than I need to.

Thats a very nice laptop. One thing I will say though, is I have had 2 friends go through 3 Asus in the past 3 years. That is one thing to consider, another is we have had bad luck with our Asus' at Staples, enough that we don't even carry any as far as this current model series goes. They make fantastic computer components so I'm not sure what they are doing differently as far as complete builds go. btw the standard issue has always been motherboard related, so not minor by any means.

Thanks, man. I had a friend who got an Asus and some plastic screws or something melted and the whole thing came undone.....kinda crazy....so I was a bit leery of Asus, too....I saw you recommend the Toshiba....we've had great luck with our home Toshiba....maybe I should look that route.

Honestly Sousie, that seems overpriced for what it is, I looked around a bit and I'm seeing prices around 1299. I understand that it has some new HD fancy-shmancy display tech, but I got a quad-core i7 with a nice widescreen display with 8 gigs of RAM from Dell for a smidge over 800 bucks.
