Most bands that have blown my mind LIVE were using Boss... Cure, MBV, Swervedriver, Medicine, Sonic Youth, Silver Sun Pickups, Dino J, Mudhoney, Curve, Pavement, Air, Melvins, Stereolab, Pumpkins, Screaming Trees, Lush, J.A.M.C., Ministry, and ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE being one I was surprised about cause it was just Strat - Boss OD and some RV - AMP...

Can't judge a book but you can be a pedal snob for no reason so Cheers...

i'm not a snob, i just buy stuff i like the sound of. i have an EH Octave Multiplexer right next to all my ILF fuzzes, because it's the only thing approaching a clean octave down i could find. i use Boss EQ pedals on my looper board and an RV-3 on the main board, and only sold my TR-2 because i needed something with a light that blinked in time with the tremolo pulse for looping. but i've been known to spend weeks or more testing pedals and listening to demos in order to select e.g. the right envelope filter or compressor, and that sometimes leads me to fairly arcane shit because it's the only stuff i like. the only EF i like other than the MuTron is the EMMA, for instance, so i'm kind of stuck with it even though it's now discontinued as well...at least it doesn't cost $1000.

I'm always shocked by people who get toanz out of a few cheap pedals, but then I look closer and see that they're using shit like two Orange amps in series or something, like the guy from Hum (3 pedals, one's a Dano).

Personally, I just don't like Boss pedals. They rarely have tones that sound good to me, and I've spent hours toying with them in shops. I'd probably only ever use their EQ pedal, but I'd really rather get a Kerry King one if I ever pick one up (Edit:not because I'm a slayer fan, but because his custom mxr is a bit nicer than the stock, even if it looks dumb).

I was super surprised when I found out that Buzzo uses a ODB-3 for his distortion. And, the bass player in Harvey Milk uses just an ODB-3 too. It's weird. So, like, I tried one...and I did not dig it.

But, I think I could strip things down to just a Rat, a delay, and a tuner. I'd still probably not get a boss delay though...

If pressed, I'd say the Boss DD7 would do quite well in a stripped-down live situation.

I use it all the time. It's take one hell of a beating and no problems yet.

I could cut my rig down to the "find it at any Guitar Center" criteria, for sure.

Assuming they didn't jack my backline, and we're just talking about pedals here.

Ugh, not me. Not a single decent fuzz pedal I've ever seen at GC. I agree that I could get by with Boss/Digitech/MXR for modulation and delay, though.

3 things from me:

1. rocktron pedals are actually pretty decent

2. what everyone has said about good music not always needing good gear

3. i think theres a point where sounds-good-alone and sounds-good-with-a-band separate, and a decent amount of good pedals can fall into that area

Great point. Not saying everyone disregarded this, but it's good to think about.

I hear what you're saying about most effects, but I stand by what I said about fuzz and dirt. Especially for bass. The Boss/Digitech/MXR offerings in those categories are ... not good.

Well a modded DS-1 can sound bitchin’.

Can I be a snob and an un-snob at the same time?
I like what I like so to me a cheap ass Moen pedal next to a DR. Scientist or custom Ghost pedal makes perfectly good sense.

On the other hand depending on a crew of people getting my gear loaded on the tour bus tonight and set up in Cleveland tomorrow might make me want to think easy replacement.

What band is this guy from anyway?

Mogwai used almost nothing but Boss Distortion for a long time and they sound pretty good.

MXR Distortion+/DOD250 into a Big Muff of some variety would be a GC-friendly replacement for Singing Tree>Supercollider.

I don't really use modulation except for my own shits & giggles.
