ideal speakers for Baritone gutiars

Post by oinkbanana »

so I've been playing a baritone lately into my orange stack and ampeg stack.
it's been great and fucking wonderful dumb loud as a pair
I've got V30's in the orange which are nice, but I worry about the excessive bass excursion (so i cut the lows on the orange)
and the Ampeg 8X10 is definitely lacking in the higher frequencies.
but they are a great compliment to each other.

It's gonna be a disaster lugging it around when I start gigging & need to start thinking about something portable.
4X15?
what kind of speakers? Big Ben?

anyone care to brainstorm

& it would be the bees knees if I could use this for synth too (which comse with the problems of wanting to be full range)

I just run my V30 with anything: guitar (with octave down pedals), baritone and bass. If the speaker die, i will buy new ones. But i do not think, that will happen.
The sound is really what i like so i see no need to change. But i'm interested if you find a better solution.

I use EVM12L's with mine. They are super clean and will handle almost any amount of wattage.

Buy some Dietz 2X15s. They're startlingly compact.

They're all old cabs. So, used is the only real way you'll find any.

Loud and stupid clean always did it for me, I needed speakers that could handle bass, guitar, and synth, and usually was happy with JBL 12s and 15s.

Not cheap, heavy, and mean, but never let me down.

If you like the sound of the V30s, I say stick with that and add a 215 cab.
The V30's are rated down to 70Hz which is lower than most 12s and
as low as most 15s when it comes to guitar speakers so the baritones lows shouldn't
be a problem or cause any damage.

I have a 215 with Eminence Legend 1518s and another with Weber Michigans.
I use both in different combinations with 412s. One W/G12H30s & One W/Eminence GB128s.
The Webers are what Emperor uses in their 15" cabs so I'd assume that they are tailored to
downtuning and baritone type frequencies.

Going off of my experience with a Bass VI, the Weber/V30 combo would probably compliment well.

I'm not sure abooot in Canada but in the US you can pick up empty (or loaded) Peavey 215 cabs
for around $150. I bought one like this and put the Eminences in it. It's pretty light, not too big,
and easy to move around.

the idea is that a 4X15 wouldn't be any bigger then the 8X10. one cab.
and I wouldn't be hauling around the 8X10 and two 4X12

maybe a 4X12 of V30 and single 2X15 would do the job too.

EVM12L... tempting. IIRC some people have had cabs cave in from the weight of four of them on the baffle. (20lbs each)
the Weber Michigan aims to bring the same low end, and much lighter at 12lbs
well, weight is not an issue when dealing with monster cabs.

can you build a 4X15 the same size as an ampeg 810? 26X48
or am I better to build two 2X15 the size of 4x12?

Yeah, I was commenting that a 4x15 is not most people's idea of "portable". (Well, not unless you have roadies.)

It's all relative, but I think 4x15s tend to seem huge.

I'd go with two 2x15s or a 2x15 + a 4x10 or something like that.

4X15 usually ends up being about a 8x10 in size. But, two 2x15s would be easier to come by, and would fit better in cars.
