I've been bowhunting since I was 14, with a recurve you need to make sure at full draw that it reaches to an anchorpoint such as the corner of your mouth (this way you can develop consistency in your form). They're pretty rough on your fingers at first but for an axe player the callouses you already have should help a lot. Be sure to try compounds, you can get some pretty nice let-offs on weight so that if you plan to hunt you can stand at full draw for quite a while until you have the opportunity for a clean shot. With a recurve there is no letoff in weight so don't try and get the highest weight you can pull back, just get something that is comfortable and that you can hold at draw for a good while without shaking. A good archery shop should have someone that can hook you up with something that works for you. Compounds don't need a ton of maintenance, I haven't even had to change the string on mine in 14 years, just normal upkeep and waxing the string should be fine.

I'll be sure to look into compound bows as well. The club my wife went to had rentals available so I'll be able to try both when I make the jump. I'm thinking about trying to get into next weeks intro then make it part of a weekly routine to just go out and try stuff,...pickup a brace and a glove.

What are the trigger mechanisms that I see people using. What are the advantages and disadvantages of that device? Seems like more of a target/competition tool.

You'll see those mainly with compound users. Its more consistent and accurate than fingers but it takes a little getting used to.

Though, in the theoretical "zombie apocalypse/no grocery" sense, I don't think any of us will be following those types of laws.

Some of my Canadian friends said it is pretty difficult to procure firearms up there. Not sure if they just meant handguns though.

go compound. i mean, i like older stuff as much as the next guy, and I like simple, but compounds are just awesome.

I got a bow that Diamond made for Bass Pro Shops, and it was like 300 with a case and arrows, but it was on a super sweet sale, i think it would be like 500 without the sale, but its awesome. tons of fun

Can't you get a permit for a bow for fishing and hunting ? Like wasn't there some serial killer who used one here like 10-15 years ago i would imagine it wouldn't of been banned just for that?

Does canada have a good economies and social medicine as i like australia but i need by gats eventually.

So today; I went out and took the intro Archery Class. I dig it. It was a lot of fun. I still have plenty to learn,...but I was shooting groups of three and by the end of the class they were getting pretty tight.

I notice that my shoulders feel really weak when I'm holding draw and that is cause me to be shaky and unsteady. I usually take my time aiming. I figure the unsteadiness will go away with more practice. Maybe I should start a regiment of pushups and doing some yoga poses (at the wife's suggestion).

I think I'm going to just keep renting and taking classes for the time being,...save up all the while,...and when I know I'm committed,...look into getting a quality setup.
