Sowwy, I was hunggy so I ate it.
But what is this nonsense? Inspiration? Versitility? Have I fallen into some old geezer, acoustic forum? What happen to toanz?! That's what I assumed we are talking about. What is most important in *the rig you are using on stage* to create the best (which is going to vary from person to person) sound? That's strictly the angle I'm approaching this from.

I play a $150 guitar through a $200 amp, I have well over $1000 in pedals. You can see where my priorities are
I don't play in a band so I don't need a loud amp, just a five watt VHT. My Schecter plays just fine, but I do want to invest in a good guitar this year, hopefully a baritone that's just a dream to play.
I somewhat regret this train wreck of a thread, well at least a train wreck on my part. I'm not saying I play uncomfortable guitars because I don't want to spend money on them. I was just saying I have my two guitars, $500 range (worth far less in the condition they are in) but I wouldn't want to spend more than that on a guitar anyways, where as with an amp I would be willing to go to the $1000+ range, and I already have over a G in pedals. Some of you make it seem like some others of us don't want a guitar in our chain hmmm then again maybe we don't

SHIT I JUST STICK MY OUTPUT CABLE UP MY URETHRA I'M IN A BAND CALLED ETHEL AND THE CATHETERS
Yeah, obviously it's nice to have good equipment all around, but if you're playing good shit through a shitty amp it's still gonna sound like shit. This is probably the only attitude I've taken from UG and I'm gonna stick with it. Audiences don't care about how nice and inspiring your guitar feels.
Obviously reality complicates things if you want to play some obtuse "cabin in the woods" game, but I'm talking about gear in a vacuum, er, figuratively I mean, a vacuum wouldn't have sound now would it? ramblerambleramble

but the point is, a decent amp doesn't mean an amp that costs $1000+. it's totally possible to buy a great amp that's loud enough for band use for half that or less. my used Laney VC30 was $500, and the last time i had it in a setting with a number of other players i liked it better than anyone else's amp, including blackface Fenders, Victorias, vintage Voxes, and other boutiquey stuff four to six times as expensive. you may not be able to get a huge stack that allows you to pretend you're in Slayer, but you can get an excellent amp. you can get Peaveys for nothing that'll blow peoples' heads off. hell, used silverface Twin Reverbs go for $600-700 nowadays around here, and you can KILL PEOPLE with them.

I completely agree Kitteh, my pricepoint is more of "luxury" pricing, such as I would spoil myself to get a collectable amp, where as other would spoil themselves with a Johnny Marr Sig Jag.
i totally agree with that...if i was going to drop three or four K (HA HA) i'd get a Hiwatt, not an R9. i just feel that if one thing is going to be best out of the chain, i need it to be the guitar.

Live, I couldn't care less about the amp... I'm just going to jump around and yell at you about my ex and existentialist crises I've had in my old dorm. as long as.it's louder than shit. A great amp never comes through as such on stage unless you've got an amazing pa/Front of house guy anyways. guitar is where it's at for me...in the studio is a different story, but I'm playing out more than I'm recording. 2 cents
Shit yeah, price doesn't actually matter. It's good for a rule of thumb (never spend more on a guitar than amp), but there are plenty of exceptions. I spent roughly the same amount for my Vox AC15 as I did my Carvin MTS3200 head used (with some good mods) and a no-name cab w/ EHX speakers also used, and their quality is roughly the same, but the half-stack is much louder, more usable, and takes pedals better.

i don't think we're talking about the audience, but about US hence i was talking about what's important for ME
To some extinct a good amp can get more out of a medium guitar, but a medium amp definitely won't realize the potential of a great guitar.
I think that neck shapes and playability are not really an issue once you get into the medium quality segment (which commences reliably around 300€ if you are willing to look, you might get lucky with cheaper instruments even.) You can find any variety of neck shape in that or higher priced segments. Good playability for you and the perfect neck shape is just a matter of looking and playing lots of instruments, not exactly of price.
Thus I would be willing to invest lots more time into finding a good guitar than into finding a good amp. But I would avoid getting a guitar that is in another league as my amp(s). I would spend more on an amplifier though. I would not spend as much time on a single pedal or as much money on a single pedal as on guitar or amp. I don't believe there are pedals that would reward that effort/money. If taken as a whole I do of course invest much more money and time into my board than into g/amp. I think most of us do. That's what we're here for.
Once I can get back to spending money on gear these will be upgraded:
pedals pedals pedals amp power supply pickups
(Oh, yeah. If we take speakers into account, we should also list pickups, which make at least 50% of an electrics tone I think.)
So I'm actually kind of weird in this respect I guess. My order would go something like this.
1. Bass-have to have a nice one, otherwise, what the fuck is the point? Nice basses cost money. On the other hand, you can sometimes get a nice bass used on the cheaps. 2. Amp-same as having a nice bass. I have to have something that has a rich, thick tone and doesn't get drowned out by a shit guitar player. Heh. Just kidding. But seriously. I like what I have now and it cost money. 3. Effects-essential? No. Fun? Yes. Do I HAVE to have effects to enjoy playing my bass? Not really, but I love that angry shit. LOVE. I could probably get away with having one pedal to be honest. Or two. A nice OD and a fuzz. Everything else is gravy. At least until I find some people that like playing good music. lol
With that said, I have spent too much on everything. My bass was like 2600, head and cab 1200, pedals...fuck...I don't even know. I've got over a grand though right now.
