Let us all give thanks to Larry graham, who not only invented slap bass (tastefully) and...BASS FUZZ. Go listen to Dance To the Music.

On occasion ill enjoy Claypool's music but it never has anything to do with Les.

No disresprect to Larry Graham, but "Think For Yourself" was 3 years before "Dance to the Music".

I know that this is going to sound like anathema for a bassist to say, but I really can't stand 99% of slap bass, and I really don't listen to funk at all.

Yah, he really wasnt the first, now was he.

Slap bass is good when its done in a way that still retains a heavily emphasised rhythm. Claypool et al does not do that.

And for those who don't listen to a lot of funk, I recommend the early 70s funk, James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Eddie Hazel era Funkadelic, BETTY DAVIS. That stuff is HARD ASS FUNK. Late seventies funk has its moments, but can be kinda meh overall.
