Re: where the musicians at?
I would just be very clear on the flyer about what you are looking for. Make it known upfront.
I got into my the band before the one I am in now because a dude was wearing a Slayer shirt in Wal-Mart. I was like nice shirt bro and what do you know, he was in a DeathMetal band that needed a bass player. Tried out, then the madness began..

flyer up at music schools/college campuses for sure.
CL is ok but be prepared for a long haul and lots of weird auditions/hang outs - in my experience, it's better to just grab a beer and hang with someone before actually having them come jam. it can save you from even MORE awkward jam sessions...
facebook blasts occasionally? ask some friends to do the same?
patience is a virtue when it comes to finding another musician to play with that you really dig.

Fact.
Singers have it or they don't. A guitarist...man guitar is so fucking easy. Just find a bum off the street and strap one on. They'll figure it out eventually. Might even be able to afford more shit since guitar players always be broke.
OK, I kid, I kid.
It's easier to gell with decent cool people than talented douchebags. Especially if the rhythm section is solid.

Re: where the musicians at?
yah. we're kind of going for a The Rhythm Section Is The Lead thing. just want somebody to fill out some parts with melodic leadish stuff, NO SOLOING. i fucking hate guitar solo's. i hate solo's period. bass solo's are the worst. actually, i dunno which i hate more. i had a bass teacher one time, we were talking about the omg it's so boring levels of skill Wooten and them have, and he said, "yeah. it's like they grew up listening to WHEEDLE WHEEDLE WHEEDLE and were like, ooo! i can do that! WUBBADAH WUBBADAH WUBBADAH.".
hurm. dunno if colleges would be the best. my drummers 28 i think and i'm no spring chicken. i don't care about age but a 20ish kid might be weird? dunno. music stores are a good idea. i've never looked for a bandmate. the few bands i've been in they knew me, knew what i like to do, wanted me to do that. it's.... an experience. yeppers on the Hang First. we have one dooder on gitar coming in monday, i don't LOVE most guitar styles so we'll see. everybody that answered we've asked for links first.
Mad Owlz - we live over in El Cerrito, kinda near Berkeley, practice in Oakland. SF is cool, but it is EXPENSIVE. and all my friends are in the East Bay so commuting/paying for the bridge all the time SUCKS. is your whole band moving up? y'all gots some cool stuffs.

Re: where the musicians at?
I found it good. I'm 28, singer is 29, lead guit is 32....rhythm is 22 and drummer is 21. It's a cool mix of old people skill (you know...like old people strength...they just know how to use what they got in the best way) and young person finger on the pulse of modern music. Image means a lot, too. Young people hate watching their dads on stage. Old people get jealous with youth. Mixing is where it's at.
We had/have a GREAT mix. You have to find nonstubborn old people and talented youth...but it works well.
And yeah Jaco "look at my attention whore boring asshole" Postorizia, Wooten, and sloppy ass claypool bore me, too.

I've always had trouble starting bands with people I'm already friends with because we never can put serious work in. Either we just improv for an hour or we end up just doing something else. That said finding people who want to play anything similar to what i want to has been impossible.

Haha. Yeah. It's like....guys...we need to get a good 15 minutes of work in...so I need you to clear your schedules from 7 to 10pm.
The best investment we made was buying a Roland portable field recorder thinger. Then we record a riff, everyone takes it home on USBs, and when we get back together we have a nice set of ideas to choose from and play around with.

The internet is too mainstream. I only communicate using smoke signals. It's all analog.

Yeah...when I hear "no facebook"....I just think "now why did the court order that.....?"
But that's where it's at. When my band had 200 likes, we couldn't play anywhere. We hit up all of our friends and topped 1,000...without playing that many shows...and the bars would start hitting US up. It's very sad. But it's all about your facebook presence.

Re: where the musicians at?
i don't think its really sad, its just a sign of the times.
its WAY easier to book shows when you have a page where people can easily access you, and facebook has done a good job positioning themselves as the easiest way to do that, especially with all the connections you can hook up to your site.
