Explanation is needed because a lot of people don't like really dark roasted coffee in general and I want to know if it is a hate of roasts such as french roast vs light roast coffee. I have never thought of their coffe as burnt as much as bitter.

Ok here's the explanation. I know this because my step-dads friends is in a high position in the company and explained it to him when they went out drinking:
It's not just dark roast. It's burnt. There's a difference. That's why it smells so strongly when you pass a starbucks, and not as much when you pass by a coffee shop that has very good coffee.
If starbucks was just a single store, people would go there and take a sip and go "wtf? This is burnt." And they would go on with their lives and never go back.
Thing is, when you and millions of other americans are leaving for work and NEED coffee, starbucks is most convenient. Since you go there because you have to, you start getting used to the taste, and no other coffee appeals to you as much as their coffee.
Thats why, even if i liked their coffee, i would never drink it.

OK, here's the real explanation: As people've already stated, when coffee is roasted too darkly it obscures the actual flavor of the beans. What "too darkly roasted" actually is comes down to a matter of personal taste, but there's a point where the degree of the roast begins to encroach upon the optimal flavor of the beans. Over roasting is often used to cover up the lack of good flavor in poor quality beans. Starbucks is now so huge that I can't imagine that the increase in numbers of cups served hasn't negatively effected the quality of the coffee that they're peddling. Bitter taste is a sign of poor quality. Think diner coffee.
