Seriously, Rock Band actually is a good way to learn drums, at least the basics. I'm trying to remember how I learned to play. Just start with the basic rock drum beat (kick-and-snare-and-kick-and-snare-and-...w/hi-hat on all of those). Listen to drums more in music. Try to play those and kablam! You'll be a regular John Bonham in no time, and I don't just mean drinking yourself to death.

So my college has this jam room with a couple amps and beat to hell guitars and a drum set. There are like 2 bands on campus, so hardly anyone ever uses it. Part of the reason that there are no bands here is that we have no drummers; I know at least a dozen people who play guitar or bass (and like five hundred who play classical instruments, 'cause this is nerd school), and maaaybe 3 people here who can pull off drums, two of whom learned everything they know from playing Rock Band. I kind of know nothing about drums, though, or how to go about starting to play. Any particularly helpful resources out there on the interwobs? I mean, I can go to Google and ask it how to play drums, but... lots of spammy sites and such. It would probably be better to have lessons, but lessons cost money, and I have free access to a drum kit, and I generally like learning on my own. Somehow I think just sitting down at a drum set and trying to figure out how to drum will be a little more difficult than sitting down with a bass and figuring out songs, though. Or maybe I'm over-thinking it and I should just start hitting things.
Play high hat with your right hand. Snare with your left. Bass drum with your right foot. Your left foot should hold down the hi-hat pedal so that the hi-hats stay together. Hit the bass drum with your right foot. Count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. Play the high hat on all counts. Hit the bass drum on 1 and 3. Hit the snare of 2 and 4. Don't mess with anything else until you can play that pattern consistently. Go get your ipod, put on some Led Zeppelin and your headphones, and start playing along. Keep it simple. Stay away from toms and crash cymbals for now.
I remember this thread! I ended up doing pretty much that ^^^ and other simple patterns for a while, and then term ended... My sister also got me an old Rock Band set for Christmas, so I've been doing that a bit. Hopefully skills will indeed build/translate.
