This is my only experience with this word other than my African-American friend in college who taught me to correctly use the expression "n***a dang!"
The way I see it, the word was created to dehumanize slaves and justify their subjagation. Today, it has been coopted by black culture to be the equivalent of "person" just like I would use "dude" or "man" which is cool.
That said, I'm far too white to use it myself, and if I did, even in an ironic context, it would be the most awkward sounding thing ever. Maybe it would be good if society removed racial connotations, but I'm not going to be the first honky to throw it around lightly.
Note: I'm talking in general, not on a forum or anything. I personally am done with that whole thing.
