I was waiting for the "it's a false dichotomy" post.

And homeboy just nailed the important bits of the discussion all in one post.

Yeah, this is what I meant to say but got caught up in being annoyed about silly arguments, but forgot the explanation of why it's a REALLY silly argument. Also I couldn't have said it that well. :thumb:

It annoys me possibly more than fundamentalist religious people when atheists take things like evolution and the world being created a lot longer than 6000 years ago, which are things only SOME christians (I know less about other religions so I won't try to include that, I'd probably just look stupid) believe in, and are completely compatible with believing in god, and say it completely refutes the religion. It annoys me not just because that doesn't make any sense, but because they say they just follow science, but then use unscientific reasoning to come to a false conclusion which benefits them.

Unless they're really fucking stupid atheists, they know that that doesn't completely refute the religion. But it DOES refute the literal interpretation of the bible. I haven't heard too many atheists make the former argument, but maybe that's because all of my friends are smart atheists.

I have, and I hate it. Not from my friends, but from very annoying people I've met and quite possibly me back when I was a stupid 16 year old who though hating religions and explaining why to everyone was cool or something rather than just being a dick.

You can see how someone might get through "if they believe x and y, and I can prove x isn't true, then y must not be", but it's completely illogical. And the reason I stopped was because I realised that I was being a jerk to loads of nice people (not in person, I had religious friends and didn't try to convert them or belittle their beliefs, but still I definitely thought I was better for not believing) and also I don't really care that much because apathy is easier.

I meant, like, he could make ANOTHER version of him to fuck, and that version is a female.

Like a heavenly sex robot.

But I guess being attracted to yourself is a little gay...

also, would it be more socially acceptable if god was a woman and made a doppelgänger that she wanted to fuck?

gee, i wonder why i always got kicked out of religion class as a child? :poke:

I wish I got kicked out of religion class as a child, I hated that bullshit, and I hate(d) even more that it was compulsory.

 That's pretty good going. I never miss an opportunity to tell my parents how thankful I am that they didn't bring me up going to church or to be religious at all, but also didn't try to shove ANY agenda down my throat and let me make my own choices.

well, i guess it was my choice. i grew up home schooled then went to a catholic school in fourth grade because the friends i had all went there. i was always raised with an open mind and had knowledge of all the religions. my parents are pretty awesome

I wasn't suggesting your parents forced you into it, just reminded me of that in general. I can understand going because your friends did, I might have done something like that when I was young. Although maybe not, I hated doing prayers and hymns in a non-strict CoE school quite enough.

Heh. I had religion classes. They were called Science and History... and Bible.

Christian education should be illegal. : D

eh, being home schooled, i pretty much coasted through 4th, 5th and 6th grade as most of it was stuff i had already learned and then when i went to a public high school, my freshman year and part of sophomore year was pretty much refresher of what i went over in like 8th grade. a good solid percentage of my graduating class' top 25% of students came from parochial schools. i don't think i'd be half as smart as i was if it wasn't for being home schooled and parochial school up until high school, not gonna lie.

also, sorry for the thread hijack

people from either camps who debate creationism v. evolution are dumb.

catholic church has accepted it for fucking centuries (since the 1600's or so. evolution is older than you think) and any scientist worth their giblets will tell you that science can't go where creationism goes and therefore cannot disprove it.

as if science proves anything to begin with.

if you go "now wait just a minute there" you just THINK you know what science does, as opposed to what it actually does.

I've never encountered anyone who denies evolution who actually has the faintest idea what it is or how it works.
