I lived in Sumter, SC (bumfuck nowhere) for a few years and I honestly never saw the strong backwards christian stereotypes of the south. Granted, I was young and in high school and had other things on my mind. But I was full blown "alternative". I wore skirts and girls clothes. Trench coats, make-up, shirts with pentagrams, black finger nail polish. Walked around town and went to school like that and I never got much shit for it or for being gay(im not, most people just assumed). Shit, I was friends with everybody. One would think I would hear "YOU'LL BURN IN HELL" all the time. I did hear a lot of racism. No bullshit, my school was 80% african american. I heard it from both sides. I was 1 of about 7 asian kids in my HS. I was always "that chinese boy" But I had a great time in SC. One of my favorite places.
Back to topic: I feel the billboard doesnt speak for the town. It speaks for the church and church goers, who I ignore anyway. If i drove through a town with a billboard like that, I would merely laugh and not assume the town is made up of bumkin-fucks that walk around with a bible in their back pocket and a gun in the front until I had first hand experience living in the town. They have the right to put up whatever message they want to push, as ignorant as it may be.
It would be hilarious to a pro-gay message on the other side of the billboard and I would gladly contribute.

locust, as in 'trees,' not 'biblical plague of'
although, i should probably start telling people that it's called that because it was once ravaged by swarms of insects infused with holy wrath
