That is so weird. I lived on the Cambridge/Somerville line for like 5 years after college, and then another 2 years down in the West Roxbury part of Boston, and went to law school in downtown Boston during that time, and I never heard any kind of that shit at all. It was all very egalitarian/liberal/kumbaya/whatever, and it was really cool. I was always puzzled about the reputation Boston had for being racist, because I never saw a shred of it.

i went to emerson college for a little while. i got a good amount of shit for not being white, and an immense amount of shit for being from new york.

Well, it depends. Larger cities/college towns have more liberal leanings. And this place was just outside of a more socially progressive college town. But beyond that, there were these little farm towns where Nascar Jeebus rules the roost with his fiery brand of justice. My hometown of Columbus, GA. isn't that bad. I mean, there's racism and homophobia, sure, but not to the degree that people put their shit out there on billboards. But overall, people just mind their own and keep it to themselves.

Yeah, I tried to ask that without generalising so much, a better question probably would have been "are there places that actually are that bad?" and it seems there are.

I didn't see much when I was in college, but since then I have seen a lot. Just this morning even there was some woman on the train I was taking to work yelling at a bunch of black kids that they were "fucking n******" and that they should "go back to Africa".

People suck so much.

Check out some literature about the Boston busing riots if you want some background. We're not even a half-century away from that mentality and the people that perpetuated that kind of behavior.

Well yeah, no shit. I know all about all of that. I did grow up in the area. I was talking about it's reputation for STILL being a racist city NOW.

Right. My point is/was, a lot of the sentiment that drove those situations to the points that they hit still exists today.

freedom of speech does include stupid and hateful shit (except in libel or whatever, harrassment, etc. you know)

BUT

it also allows for people to correct the ignorant. whenever I see people saying stupid shit I try not to be all "shut the fuck up you ignorant fuck" its more "hey, thats not right. heres why" *splainin hand*

My experience with the south

By Astricii

One time a friend and I went to Ohio to pick up a car that he had (unwisely) purchased from the internet.

on the way back we drove through Missouri. It was close to the fourth of july and there were fireworks stands and stores all over the place.

almost every one was running a special on "[EDITED] Chasers"

I have not been back to the South since.

I see we have language filter running on the N Word.

I used it to show just how fucked these people are. using it on signage for FAMILY oriented celebrations on an interstate where all the rest of the world can see.

That, to me, is FUCKING AGGRAVATING. I have no sympathy for anyone who's openminded and choses to still live in the south. hitch a fucking train, do whatever it takes to get out of there. just leave them to their own devices and let them implode.

I'm kinda glad to live on the north end of the south (Virginia Beach, VA).
Although I really wanna go to Asheville.

One time my grandpa told me, and I quote:

"Now, I'm not prejudice... but the reason the economy is so bad is that, when you go the bank, there's too many colored people working there."

And my grandma (from the other side of the family) believes that black skin is a curse from God. Something about the tower of Babel or something.

I often get in arguments with my parents about the whole "black people don't want to work" thing. Somehow lazy white people are invisible. I mean, have you ever been to Kentucky?
