Welllllllllll that wasn't really SELF released, per se, as it was done through a local RI label. I recorded it, did the art & had it manufactured myself, but they do the promo & distro, which is what always strikes me as "the hard part."

Yeah, I hear what your'e saying. I thought he was more talking about the recording and mastering part, which you did.

Yep, I 'spose I did... though the mastering was done by my bandmate from my "regular" band. He's got the gear & the picky picky ears & the oscilloscope-y plugins that let you see what overall mix frequencies are being neglected and whatnot... it's good to have a friend like that...
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

True. It can costs a lot to do it in a studio, BUT it usually is worth the money. Always Usually a good thing if You can do it with a friend for a fixed price /exchange of favors. :thumb:

Making myself record usually isn't my problem. Making myself write is.

Stay up till the early hours and do it. I find when there's nobody to bother me and no distractions I work the best.

i record myself all the time. just force yourself to do it until it becomes habit.

it doesn;t take too long before it becomes habit, and you won;t even think twice about it

This x1000. I sit down, put my coffee on my coffee warmer, pick up guitar or bass, and go to work. It has to become like it's your job, while your actual paying job is your second job. If it's what you want to to in life, treat it with priority and urgency.

One of the big(gest) issues I'm having with one of the bands I'm involved in is getting the mainguy to actually sit down, write, and finish something. It becomes too internalized with him, and subsequently every note "becomes" an extension of himself, and thus he can't take that step back (out of his own ass) to finish and commit to anything.
