Upcoming show conflict
So the rhythm guitarist in my band can't make the band's next show for whatver (probably stupid) reason, if the rest of the band can still play, should we still go on without him, or should I cancel? On one hand, I don't care he's a bitch to deal with at shows and he's usually to loud and he's the rythm guitarist, but on the other hand it won't sound as full sounding without him, so what do I do, ILF help me out here.

play without him...think of it as an audition in reverse, if you get my drift.

Re: Upcoming show conflict
It really depends a lot
but have You considered finding a replacement?
If Your guitarist is really good BUT has shit for self esteem You probably don't want to do the gig unless it's going to be a good/important show.
I have replaced original line up bassists myself a few times, also, I have sometimes practiced the bass parts like mad, just to have the gig canceled on me because the bands own bass player threatened the band to quit if they choose to go with a replacement session bassist.
Definitely the sort of guys I wouldn't like in my bands.
My old black metal band played several shows with replacement. Sometimes two, covering for the band leader (G & vox). Whenever a musician had REAL hardships with calendar and band responsibilities, he was supposed to suggest a replacement musician himself if the gig was worth it for the band. Everybody was supposed to agree that the bands good came always first, overruling much of the personal and egocentric issues. That's how I wish EVERY band I ever played in would have worked.
Another old band I played in worked this kind of problems by simply re-arranging the songs to the bare bones and in those few songs by the end of the show the singer claiming the stage free for anybody who has an instrument and wanted to join in and jam a bit. Usually from the warming up band.
Crazy gigs.

Re: Upcoming show conflict
I'd say just play the show without him.
My band plays shows without one of the members all the time, there's probably one guy who's essential and the rest of us are cool with everyone else playing if they can't make it, no ego shit involved (and the one essential guy would be cool with everyone else playing without HIM, I just think it'd be a terrible show!
).

I'd try playing without him. I'm in the same boat as monkeydancer. There's one person in the band who's important/essential the rest of us are there to fill up the sound. We played a show a couple weeks ago that was me and the essential guy(guitar/synth and guitar) and it was one of the funner shows we've played. Plus we didn't have to haul around as much stuff.

Re: Upcoming show conflict
anyone who isn't familiar with your band's music is not going to notice that a rhythm guitarist is missing. my band played a show without a lead guitarist and nobody noticed. people still liked it and we still had fun. it'll be good practice for your band to just roll with it.

I was gonna say that if you can't get a full sound with a trio, you obviously need more amplifiers
