The Importance of Earplugs.

Post by Holy Schnikes »

Them Crooked Vultures lay waste to eardrums, results in suicide!?!? Although, from the article pic this guy could've been steadily blowing out those drums for years now. :idk:

Regardless, wear them plugs friends.

yeah, I have in ear and over the ear for all occasions. I have a drummer buddy who need in ear headphones with the other over the ear protection with the mix at full blast just so he could hear the track. broke my heart...he still asked me to turn it up :picard:

I listened to excessively loud music through my teen years when drunk, in the end my right ear would distort audio a lot, I went through several sets of ear/headphones before I realised what was going on, thankfully I cured it by plugging it for a long time and using the other ear, but it's a lesson I wont forget.

I will say about the article though, it seems less that he killed himself because of the noise but he had become depressed with everything due to a lack of sleep, not just the noise. He probably had a predisposition.

Ear plugs = good! that way you can shake the fucking earth and still have hearing needed to mix your music.

Really sucks for that guy's family. :(

I keep meaning to invest in some proper earplugs, but haven't done it yet. I don't have very good hearing, probably from lots of ear infections as a kid, and I'd rather it didn't get worse any time soon and definitely don't want tinnitus. BUT I go to loads of gigs and play in a band (we play in small places so I normally have my amps basically pointed right at my ears too...) and jam all without earplugs.

I invested in some good attenuators about a year ago. 15db or 25db reduction, custom fit. One of the best decisions I've ever made. Fit beautifully, I can hear people talking to me just fine, and it only cost about $150, with a hearing test. Worth every penny.

Recently I've been going to shows a lot more often and I'm not comfortable with my hearing being fucked up for days. I hate not being centered in relation to the PA as well. Plus my head is always above everyone else's so I get smacked directly by the upper half of the speakers. I've been thinking about earplugs but I gotta get a job first.

Do the earplugs you can buy at drug stores even do anything? Just muffle the high frequencies?

They reduce the decibels and work fine. Hearing is a bit muffled, but I'm glad I've always kept an industrial box or bulk tub of them in my vehicle for shows, jamming, shooting, etc. I like still being able to hear.

Speaking of....

I saw A Place To Bury Strangers last year with no plugs like a moron. They bring the kind of volume that has you checking you ears for blood. About 5 minutes in, I went all MacGyver, cutting a cigarette filter in half and cramming that thing in my ears.

I can still hear today as a result.

I think the band I'm in plays ridiculously quietly compared to most. I can play a gig without my ears ringing/feeling muffled/whatever, but when any other band starts playing they are a lot louder. The other guitarist in my band plays an acoustic-electric into an electric amp and sometimes I can hear his physical guitar even though it has one of those feedback stoppers in it. But I'm thinking about starting to wear some over-ear plugs at practice anyway because I worry like that. For other bands, though, I always make sure I have ear plugs.
