No. That would be Eric Burdon. Santana was the real deal. Eric Burdon hired a bunch of Caribbean guys. They were popular because he was in the Animals

Weren't they mostly from East L.A.? Either way, they were better without Burdon than with him (although The Animals and Eric Burdon band were great and you gotta give him props for what he tried. White guy making aggressive, heavily percussive, funky music with a huge band is basically my model.).

Are you serious? The Black Man's Bourdon is one of the seminal records of the era. You've never heard Paint It Black 'til you've heard the ten minute Eric Bourdon and War version.

Footer:their cover of Knights in White Satin is also excellent.

in all serious, despite hearing all eras of Santana, i see NO reason whatsoever why he should be as popular/respected as he is/was

That's because you ain't got a soul, dooder. Santana at Woodstock was/is a fantastic set, and his first three records broke a lot of ground for Latino jams in white people's ears... All while being "safer" than Eric Burdon and War (who were kinda rocking on a similar route).
Who has no soul?

“Here’s the deal, folks. You do a commercial - you’re off the artistic roll call, forever. End of story. Okay? You’re another whore at the captialist gang bang and if you do a commercial, there’s a price on your head. Everything you say is suspect and every word that comes out of your mouth is now like a turd falling into my drink.”

Although I'm in total agreement with all of you -- Santana at Woodstock was awesome (read somewhere he was on acid and he thought his guitar kept turning into a snake ...) -- Santana since the 70s has been
Good deals done with all these guys

Wow, I hadn't seen that ad yet. Keep sucking Satan's cock, Santana.

yeah, I was afraid I'd come off as dissing Burdon which I had no intention of doing. Eric Burdon Band's version of Ring of Fire is another great cover. To me, these guys are and will always be in the ranks of the greatest musicians ever and deciding personal preference is rather specific and nit-picky. Basically, I'm saying they're all amazing no matter what, and everything else is semantics.

Back on semi-topic, Michael Stipe could kick Corgan's ass any day.

And back off topic, I forgot Lee Oskar was in War. He was Danish.
