It's usually more inside the delay engine I think. Like this: a BBD chip will pass a delayed signal. For multiple repeats the delayed signal is then fed back into the chip. And here the signal will pass through the loop resulting in consecutively more warped delays. If you put in something that boosts the signal you can also oscillate the delay, because what's fed back in the delay is louder than what came out, resulting in feedback.
