So do you guys like comi- err...graphic novels?

Post by StopReferencing »

I read a bunch of "Top ___ Graphic Novels of ALL FUCKING TIME" lists the other day, so obviously I'm kind of an expert now. That Jimmy Corrigan one looks neat.

My parents didn't allow comic reading/owning. I guess this is another attempt (in a long line of attempts; constant re-viewings of Star Trek: TNG, I'm looking at you :picard: ) to reclaim/revisit my youth in the hopes that it'll sedate me enough not to flip out and kill something. Today I read "The Long Halloween;" it was pretty good. Going to reread The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen later.

I had a bunch of graphic novels as a kid, buncha asian stuff. the artwork was almost always awesome, and some of the books were still in some asian language I couldn't read, but the artwork was just outstanding. They're all with my parents, and I can't remember what they were.

I was never too big into comic books though

I'm going through a midlife crisis type thing at 19 (I hope I live past 38 but...) and I'm trying to do a bunch of things that I feel I missed out in my childhood too, so I feel you completely
So this turned into another devi thread...

massive comic fan! i don't get to buy too many (muh-hunny)

3 tips i can give you.
1: take your time, read slowly enjoy it... bask in the art
2: read Sandman, it changed my life.... currently working on a sleeve of Sandman tattoos.
3: enjoy super-hero comics but don't get mired in continuity. Batman, Spiderman and Superman have some of the best stories and some of the worst, a lot don't get on those 'greatest ever' lists and are massively worth reading. Batman: War Games case in point.

oh and www.freakangels.com a free online comic by Warren Ellis one of the great masters

I LOVE Graphic Novels.

Jimmy Corrigan is excellent and will make you horrifically depressed. Chris Ware knows how to tap into the human psyche of despair and loneliness like no one else in the history of all artforms.

anyways, if you want more graphic novels that aren't re-packaged-comic-book-storylines i know where to go.

I like the classics. I tried to follow a few ongoing series but that shit adds up in expenses really fast.

As long as you're reading Batman stuff, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth is pretty much required reading.

Initial D all day. (I'm a closet auto-geek) And the early Dragon Ball back when Goku was a little turd. Other than that I find it difficult to get into, but I follow a few anime/manga blogs on tumblr to appreciate the rad art they produce.

While Watchmen is the only one I actually feel comfortable calling a "graphic novel" rather than a "giant ass comic book," I've heard a lot of good things about Sandman.
good deals are here.
flesh couch is here.
