Re: help restore my faith in humanity
Wait, are these people actually looking for you? If they are and you're telling them you don't live there, you're lying, demonstrating cowardice, possibly committing fraud and it's absurd for you to expect anyone's sympathy. I'm sure they're just as irritated as you are.
I'm not trying to rag on you, I've been in similar situations (not credit but banks), and I know how easy it is to want to hide from it. It's not the best thing to do, but I've certainly done it. However, acting like it's some poor employee of the collections company's fault is ridiculous.

No, they're looking for someone who I had never heard of before I moved into my new house and got my new phone number. Didn't you read my first fucking post in this thread? They're apparently looking for the dumb bitch who had my number before I did. Back off. That's the point I've been trying to make in this fucking thread. They keep calling for this person that isn't me, and isn't my wife, and I have no idea who this fucking person is. And they KEEP FUCKING CALLING.
Don't accuse people of being lying cowards, especially if you haven't even read the whole thread.

Cool down buddy. Your problem isn't with debt collectors, your problem is with one specific group of debt collectors who are mistakenly assuming you're avoiding them. I left a big gaping hole for that scenario which I have highlighted in the above quote. I thought it would be implied that if it's not you, then none of the rest of that post applies. Don't accuse me of not reading(or rereading 2 full pages every time I post) if you're clearly not going to read he post you're responding to.
Also, not only did I call our, now revealed to be nonexistent, hypothetical debt avoider a coward, but also called myself one as well in an attempt to empathize. Generally, I think most people act out of cowardice more often then you think; it just gets mislabeled as malicious, inconsiderate, etc..

I just didn't get why you were questioning this, when I already told the whole story on the first page of this thread. Which lead me to believe you didn't read it, or you wouldn't have bothered with that hypothetical/. And since this is my first and only experience ever dealing with any debt collection agencies, and the fact that they've been making me afraid to even answer the phone at my own house through no fault of my own, I feel perfectly entitled to cursing the entire industry as a bunch of scum-fucking assholes. I'm sure there are perfectly courteous, by-the-book, nice guys in the industry. But I've never dealt with one.

I do apologize though. Maybe I should take more extensive notes about your personal life since it obviously should be the most important thing in the world to me. Do you really expect me to recall all the details of previous posts over the past couple days?
Your conceptions of reality are confusing me, but I suppose there's nothing that arguing can do about that.
On a lighter note, I'm having the hardest time remembering that I'm not arguing with Wilford Brimley.

You accused me of something despicable. I had previously explained exactly what was going on. You're right, fuck me for assuming that you would just look at a short little 3-page thread before you lob bombs at someone. My bad.
But whatever, I will accept any and all blame for this and apologize. I'm sorry. Let's just let this die now.

F'realz, I'm just pissy about other shit.
You should start fucking with them somehow. Do you know/remember the name of the company offhand?

Unfortunately, they usually hang up the second I either told them that there was no one here by that name, or if I asked what company they were calling from. Which is fucking illegal, but it doesn't seem to stop them. Yes, I have gotten a couple of them to give me their names, and I haven't gotten the same name twice yet. So it might just be a LOT of different agencies calling rather than the same one or two.

Re: help restore my faith in humanity
can you find the number? Maybe you can look it up. There's plenty of websites where people list phone numbers that have been harassing them. It might not even be credit collectors. Maybe it's some kind of scam or something. I don't know how that would work, but the way you put it is pretty 'spicious.

when they keep calling for so-and-so, assuming you've already told them that particular debtor is not available at that number, make sure you take down the name of the company (and a callback number if possible) BEFORE telling them it's the wrong number (tell them you're taking a message or something). they are breaking the law every time they call you back after you tell them the person they're looking for no longer lives there.
keep track of when they call you. write down the date and time. or, if you have a lawyer, get them on a 3-way call as soon as the collector calls you. they are required to record most of their phone calls and keep a log of ALL of their phone calls.
and then contact a lawyer and sue them.
most of the time they'll settle out of court. but even if they don't, thanks to the FDCPA, you'll win unless you didn't keep track of who was calling you. don't forget it could be several different collectors. there are people who rack up debt, move away and change their number, and do it all over again, fucking over the next guy to get the number.
of course, you could change your number, which usually costs money, or get a privacy manager that intercepts blocked numbers, but you may not get important calls regarding personal business matters with banks or the like.
hope this helps.
Are you assuming the debtor doesn't live there? Because if not, I'm pretty sure you'd lose that settlement and get countersued for for phone fraud/no real lawyer would take your case in the first place and call you an idiot.
Also, the nazis were just doing their job too.
Details, sir, are good to read. I had that in mind in my caveat on legality, but let me extend that to the widest most general sense of morality as well. I'm also assuming you were talking about my other post because your quotes/comment follow no logical sense whatsoever.
Correct. and the Nazi bit was just trollin for the lulz.

snipz - my advice is assuming you don't know who the actual debtor is, and you have already told the collectors that you don't know him/her. i'm not gonna give tips on how to duck debt - just how to get back at assholes who aren't doing their job properly.
