Smart people are drawn to things like cults because they possess enough intelligence to rationalize things to themselves. If you're smart enough, you can convince yourself of anything and then use your own intelligence to back yourself up.

I will admit to being seduced ever so slightly by the Flower of Life,....which I guess you could call a cult. I am skeptical about people taking my money to pass on information,....but it was a neat experience going to an FOL workshop and learning the meditation and doing the exercises, making connections and what have you. In the end,...I'm still my own person,...and I don't live in a commune preparing for the second coming of apple and the hale bop comet.

There's been scientific research on that, a lot.

The latest research reports suggest that high IQ doesn't out-rule favoring religious views or cults. On the contrary, the cult leader personalities can show IQ significantly higher than statistical average. They can be mad as the Mad Hatter, too. But the people with higher education level how ever tend to avoid in the extreme far ends of political and religious movements, and are not as drawn to these as group of persons with about the same IQ but lesser education. However this can be argued to result from attempts to keep to social standing and societal pressure more than out of education and scientific/ rational world view.

That sounds fallible enough to me, in light of academical comparative religion studies. People in the faculty tend to keep cool, somewhat distanced approach on their study subjects on surface / in public BUT they sometimes get more or less personally involved with their study subjects on personal level. The higher position they hold in the faculty, the more important the academic reputation becomes.

About 10 years ago, long-time friends of my parents (educators, leaders in their church, not particularly political, etc...'normal' folks) suddenly quit their jobs, sold pretty much everything they owned, and moved to Wyoming (I think that's where it is) to live in a mountain (not on, IN...apparently there's a bunker there) to await the End Of The World or something 'cause they heard the woman who organized all this say it was gonna happen. I grew up knowing these people and still have NO idea just what they're all about now and as far as I can tell, their own kids aren't sure what it's all about either. They literally dropped their entire lives in a weekend to do this. Just what causes things like this to happen?
