I think you're better off joining a group that's associated with the field you're in (or want to be in).
I joined up with the Developmental Biology Soc, Cell Biology Soc, Computational Biology Soc., things like that. A few of them gave me money, which was nice too.
The only person I know in mensa is kinda a dork -- good at sudoku and crosswords, but not the sort of person you want to be trapped on a desert island with.
