If you just want to cruise and shit on a regular board, my advice is:

-Wider board, at least 7.75, probably bigger. I have a 7.9 that's really nice for cruising.
-Stand on as many boards as you can and get a feel for the kind of concave you like.
-Mid or High trucks, easier for turning than lows.
-Invest in some nice bearings. If you don't want to break the bank, Red's are pretty fast but may not be as durable as something like Bones Swiss.
-Bigger wheels are better for speed, just to keep in mind.

I'd go with at least an 8, gotta try out some boards, and yeah I'd go with a high truck.

speed is no issue for me, I want quality/reliability, so something that lasts is more important than something that will make me go supa fast
So this turned into another devi thread...

Any recommendations for brands just in general?

Decks: mini-logo (cheaper but not at the expense of quality, really nice boards) & I have an enjoi I really like.
Wheels: spitfire haven't done me wrong :idk: have heard darkstars are good too
Bearings: haven't had enough luck with one brand to recommend any, but I'd steer clear of lucky's
Trucks: tensors are nice. just make sure whatever trucks you get are built solid and have decent bushings.

What kind of concave do those board have? Is it most flat except the edges or a gradual dip toward the center?

Been riding for about 10 years, and this is almost exactly what I'd recommend.

It's what my dad rode, it's what I would ride, it's the truest, punkest option.

I got really into skating right before my freshman year/into my freshman year of college. Was always a huge fan of Toy Machine skate vids so naturally I just grabbed a TM board, ending up destroying one on some ledges and picked up a second one then sort of quit. I Just went to a skate park near here and would ride the mini ramps I can't do any flip tricks, just ollies and half cabs so I sort of lost interest.

That's a goddamn throwback right there.

I still have my dad's board from the 50's. Roller Skate trucks & wheels ftw!
