Help me with a Craigslist problem.

Post by Caesar »

I put a pedal up on craigslist. In addition to the phony scammer emails, I got one that seemed less phony. A guy from Russia wants me to ship him the pedal. Since it's through CL, I have no safeguards. If I force him to use the Paypal gift option, he can't come back later and withdraw the payment or file a claim, right?

I'm pretty sure thats how it works but I could be wrong. I just dont see how he can get paypal to even give a shit. if he pays with money that has not had the currency conversion, you will be charged a small fee by paypal to convert to your local currency before you have access to the funds. it doesnt take any extra time but you must go through your preferences and make sure you have the option to automatically convert currency turned on. if not, the money will sit there and it will ask you to convert. I would be most worried about russian hackers forging email headers so the paypal email is forged and then you get your account hacked. then its identity theft, your checking account drained through paypal, and many new credit cards getting maxed out in russia with your credit getting burned.

dont open any emails if your web based email does not block java script, redirects, links etc. most web based email have these protections already but you must NOT click anywhere within an email from your russian friend. dont open ANY of the paypal emails. you will open a new browser window and type http://www.paypal.com in the address bar. make sure your password is not saved. thats a problem since the paypal password would be stored on your computer. watch out for
paypaI.com (i not L)

That sounds sketchy to me but if you get the money up front you should be fine.

I posted a valve junior today on craigs and got this e-mail back

Hello you may want to find me 459-1659

no name no area code, and it is from a guy named shewbridge dobris, really want to move the amp but may not want to call the number.

Sorry if I am thread poaching.

If it sounds like a scam, it's probably a scam.
