I just think it would be nice if people are going to do this kind of research that they make it well documented and not keep it a secret. Obviously j is not greedy about it. He said he doesnt care if everyone has his tone. Its just unfortunate and its not safe from fsb unless its gooped. If fsb buys one it still puts money in his pocket. EH doesnt get any money for this either so cry me a river.

What I don't get is this:

Well, here we are at the pointy end of nearly two years of research and development.

From reading previous posts, it took him two years to figure out what was different in an incredibly well-known circuit. That doesn't really seem like a lot of R&D to me. I've never built a pedal, but if it took two years from the day I picked up a soldering iron to when I could build a muff, I certainly wouldn't call myself a professional.

and also why the hell would u wait 20 years for someone elses big muff
its a big muff you could have just bought well, a big muff?
u just wasted 20 years

buy any, buy lots and just make music already GOD
and im the idiot

and the whole point is i cant understand tym wants to make something cool and was wrong to judge
but at the same time hes saying oh i dont understand why people wanna clone things and sell it cheaper
thats not our point.. and its so hypocritical when hes copying somebody elses entire work hello ehx?? which is fine but dont try to act like you reinvented the wheel

the whole point because this obviously plays into the gooping and fsb debate is that mentality is not to put people out of business its for freedom of information
if your gonna be secretive and time and time again people are just modding other peoples circuits and calling original and try hide shit is wrong in my opinion

i can understand the anger in a sense that people make clones and sell them but claim the design as theres and original at the same time. thats wrong to me
but having schems out to examine and learn from, build your own is right.

and i dont know how to reverse but if i wanted to i could buy a fuzz munchkin and learn about its apparent secrets and what makes it tick if i wanted to
wanna know why?
cause of people releasing the information like fsb and diystomp

and dont try to cry wolf like it hurts small boutique businesses
if anything the boutique industry has exploded and is bigger then ever! and continues to grow daily with people growing confident with electronics making new sounds and pedals
and that support of small builders is apparent in ilf.com more than ever!
hang around here u might learn something

The idea that if you buy this (or any) pedal/guitar/soft drink and sound like just your hero is pretty far fetched
to put it mildly. There is so much more going on than just that pedal.

Are there people really complaining about this?

Oh wait... it's the effects industry... of course there are.

I think this is fucking fantastic. Like has already been said... those old muff's are as whatever-parts-are-available as anything EH was doing back in the day (don't forget, they were notorious for buying bulk parts from wherever they could for cheap and then turning them into guitar gear)... so the fact J. Mascis found a builder he felt confident in to let them borrow his favorite Big Muff (a notable builder for that matter), and then have it translated it into a modern working design... well... I think that's pretty fucking fantastic.

... and while sure, there might be some who think that's enough to give them a Dino Jr. sound... I think most are just excited to have at least a piece of the puzzle to get closer to getting some tonez from their favorite artist.

Fuck, I know I've been enjoying the hell out of the IC Muff now that I've found out that it's the pedal that was behind the Siamese Dream muff sound.... and fuck it if it's just my ears... but I hear the difference, and I love playing through one, and that's all that matters.

Also, as far as the price goes.... you won't find an old muff for that much, and if you did, and if it happened to be the same specs as J.'s, it sure as shit ain't going to hold up to long term abuse.

I think $300 is a good price for something so unique turned into something mass produced. I mean, sure, it could be built more inexpensively, and probably will someday (here's looking at you SUF! Make it happen!)... but for a dealer such as Tym, with the grace of J. himself... I think it's a great starting deal! :D

^^Two great posts right there.
Hats off to ya
Tym can charge what he wants -- if people want it, they buy it; if it's too expensive, they don't. No big deal.
It's certainly cool to see specific gear that have made important music dissected to see what magic, if any, lies inside.
Ritchie Blackmore's Rangemaster, Jimmy Page's Unidrive, all of David Gilmour's gear ... kinda like the guy who kept Einstein's brain. You want to know what was so special about it.
Read somewhere that Robbin Guthrie has a flanger that's knackered and he loves the sound of the way it is...

That said, give J Mascis an off the shelf BMPwTW and I'm sure he'd still sound pretty much like himself.

I'm wondering, if it's a diode in backwards, would that basically kill one of the clipping sections making it more like a Jumbo Tone Bender?

(How long til we have a JHS clone anyway ;) )

I believe j's ears. And 300USD for an unique vintage spec'd big muff which will last for decades is not a bad deal, considering today's market.

As for that sharing information thing goes, hell, EHX wouldn't enough know what's inside that specific muff.

J found that specific one among shelves of big muffs, and he made the deal to work with Tym at that pricing.

It's fair and they have the rights to keep it to their own.

Ram's head schematic is already there. It's already the freedom of information, and you can try any combination of components if that sounds good to you.

Why bash on someone who's selling just one of the special combinations?

I agree with the spirit of FSB, and I hate those so-called boutique builders out there who sell renamed OCDs

But the hatred toward someone who works his ass out to get things done as perfect as possible is beyond me.

It's a great and unique sounding ram's head, clearly stated, deal with it.
