I, too, majored in English. And I did a double "concentration" in Linguistics and Technical Writing. I also worked at the uni newspaper, which helped me get my first publishing job after graduation.
I've worked as a copy editor/web editor, desk editor, editor in chief (newspaper), managing editor (magazine), and now my title is Technical Writer.
My school requires you to concentrate in a fag or a douche. As in Shakespeare and Chaucer. Fuck those guys.
Chaucer's not so bad, but still.

At my school, all the hot/smart girls were English majors. All the pimply/no-shower girls were music majors.
different countries i guess all the hot girls were giving hand jobs in the bush at the park and all the pimply well all like 2 of them were into cricket? the joys of going to a ghetto high school
I majored in history with a minor in classical studies. Now I'm working on a degree in library sciences so I can maybe get a job that isn't in a restaurant.
With those kinds of majors, the onus is definitely on you to figure out careers. The path isn't guided like it would be with Engineering or another "more practical" science.
That's not to suggest, of course, that there are inherently fewer gigs within any given field of study. Some of them just aren't as giftwrapped.

My gf majored in Library Sciences! Also,I'm going back to school for the same reason
It's a job that keeps You surfing the internet and busy with search engines, databases and books, too. And You don't have to sell crap to people who already have enough crap. I have a steady day job at the Finnish Language, Literature and Art Research Library of the University of Helsinki myself. Steady reads as ten years in February.
But my day job and bands have effectively stalled my graduating. My major is actually aesthetics. Analytical aesthetics as in art philosophy. Helsinki University is one of the rare universities in the world where You can major from aesthetics, whereas in other universities You'll study it as a specialized field of philosophy. Among philosophical study subjects the aesthetics and art philosophy is an interesting field since the argued values are often far more perceivable than they are in many others.
