house music was the punk rock of urban gay people. one of the folks i used to work with in the rave scene in SF was an old-school NYC gay man who went all the way back to the days of Studio 54 and the Limelight, and he wrote a whole Internet history series on house music and its political and social significance for people in the 70s and 80s.

I can dig it. It's the sort of music that is integral to a cultural gathering point. The movie 24 Hour Party People traces punk/post-punk culture in Manchester from one Sex Pistols show through Factory records to the Second Summer of Love and rave culture in late 80's Britain. It makes sense. Happy Mondays are like the missing link between the two musically.
