A friend from high school said that Madison roads look and feel like a kindergartner on crack with a crayon mapped them out. They make NO SENSE.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that Madison is a craphole!

Milwaukee is great, but there are still bastions of greatness in little pockets throughout the state. If you're into crusty punk/metal stuff, Appleton/Oshkosh has you covered: Neon Hole, Choose Your Poison, The Parish, Wartorn, Razor Fist...I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Appleton also has Tenement, which I know a lot of you ILF'ers will love. Really aggressive and fuzzy jangly Husker Du worship. While I would certainly argue that Milwaukee has a burgeoning sludge/doom metal scene (Northless, Slob Donovan, Ritual Form, Spineless Bastards), Wausau of all places has some bands popping up in the same vein as well...which is neat, because this city and really the state as a whole has needed a metal scene not built on D- level misogynistic death metal for as long as I care to remember.

Eau Claire has the Ronald Raygun (and I'm sure others), and I know there is/was a cool DIY punk/hardcore space there that did shows. My old band Protestant has played there at least once. My friend Andy also has a band up there that is of the heavier variety that is real good, whose name I forget, and I believe Desolatevoid are from up there as well.
